Utah had three players in double-figures in its exhibition loss at Nevada, 71-61.
RENO, Nev. – It was a tale of two halves inside the Lawlor Events Center Saturday afternoon as Utah fell to Nevada 71-61 in exhibition play.
Â
The Utes had a slow start on offense, hitting just 1-of-8 from the field but managed to stay within one possession of the home team at the first media break, 6-3 (15:43). After a quick 5-2 spurt from Nevada, Utah's defense sparked its offense to the tune of 5-of-6 shooting from the field to get within 16-15 of the Wolf Pack at the 11:26 media timeout.
Â
Trey Campbell picked up Utah's ninth offensive board of the game to tie things up, 17-17, and led to an 8-0 run by the Utes – which forced a Nevada timeout with 2:44 left in the half. Utah would then head into the locker room on top 28-24 after a triple from Taison Chatman.
Â
The Wolf Pack came out ready to strike, knocking down their first four shots of the second half to tie things up at 34-34 to force a Utah time out (15:52). The Runnin' Utes held on to a narrow lead by the time the 11:20 media break came around thanks to the three-ball – knocking down 4-of-6 attempts up to that point in the second frame to lead 42-40.
Â
Nevada's hot shooting continued as it took its first lead of the game since the opening tip, 46-44, at the 9:02 mark before Chatman tied things up on the next possession. However, the home team answered on the next possession to go back up 49-46 with 7:43 on the clock.
Â
With 3:29 remaining, the Utes won the challenge after a block by Jackson Holcombe – which led to an alley-oop from Chatman to Zati Loubaki to bring Utah within 57-54. However, Nevada's TJ Coulter got hot from the field and went on a 16-8 run himself to push the home team's lead to 62-54 with less than a minute to go. Utah did its best to cut into the lead, but time was not on its side before falling to the Wolf Pack 71-61.
Â
Campbell filled in the stat sheet on Saturday, leading the Utes with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Chatman added 11 points off the bench while Holcombe was a rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds in 29 minutes of action.
