Utes battled the elements to take first place heading into day two
COALVILLE, Utah- The preseason No. 25 ranked University of Utah Men's Golf team started off the 2025-26 campaign strong with a gritty team and individual showing during day one of the inaugural Wohali Classic at Wohali Golf Course (7,873, Par 71).
High winds at Wohali failed to stop Utah from finishing the day with a first-place finish after 36 holes of play. The Utes were led by a number of impressive individual performances, namely redshirt senior Davis Johnson, who carded an opening round 3-under (68) enroute to a team-low, 4-under (138), 36-hole score.
Johnson was one of just eight players in the 70-player field to shoot 3-under or better in the tournament's opening round. The Arizona native began his day with a bogey-free front-nine, firing off a 4-under (31) before a birdie finish on the 18th hole would see him take a tied third-place finish (3-under) into the second round of the day.
In the second round, Johnson would continue his strong play, netting a 1-under (70) amidst high winds that saw the field struggle in comparison to the day's first round. With a 4-under (138) finish through 36 holes, Johnson enters the tournament's final round in second place, three strokes down from the clubhouse leader, Connor Williams of Arizona State (6-under).
Gabriel Palacios carded the Utes' best afternoon round, finishing with a 3-under (68) that saw him skyrocket up the leaderboard after a 1-over (72) morning round. The junior from Guatemala fared well on his final nine holes of the day, firing off four straight birdies after a 1-over start through his first 12 holes of the second round. Palacios' finish would see him rise over 20 spots in the individual ranking, as he enters the final round of the tournament tied for fourth place overall in the individual standings.
Brandon Robison and Sergio Jimenez rounded out the Utes' impressive day, finishing 1-over and 2-over respectively. Robison tied Jonhson's first round team-low of 3-under with a steady
round of 34-34 (68), before a 4-over (75) in the second round would see him finish the day tied for 10th place. Jimenez, the junior from Spain, carded a first round 1-under (70) and second
round 3-over (74), entering the final round tied for 18th in the individual standings.
After finishing the first round in third place with a team total 6-under (278), Utah carded the second round's lowest team score with a combined 3-over (287). With the round-low performance, the Utes jumped Arizona State and BYU in the team standings, taking a one stroke lead into the final round of the tournament. Through 36 holes of play, the Utes are one of two teams (Utah, New Mexico) under par. Moreover, entering day two of the tournament, the Utes are one of only four of 12 teams to have a 36-hole score less than 10-over (294).
Day One Standings
Including the Utes, the Wohali will feature 14 teams of five from all over the country.
