MILWAUKEE – The University of Utah lacrosse program extended its win streak to four games with a 16-7 road victory against the Marquette Golden Eagles at Valley Fields on Tuesday.
Utah (5-2) and Marquette (3-4) were even after the first 20 minutes of play, sitting deadlocked in a 5-5 game, but the Utes rattled off nine goals in a row between the second and fourth quarters while holding the Golden Eagles scoreless to break the game open. Utah outscored the home squad 12-4 over the final three quarters of action to hold the Golden Eagles to their lowest scoring total of the season.
The Utes are now 5-1 in six games against the Golden Eagles, and Tuesday marked the first time a game in the series had not been decided by two goals or less.
Utah held a 43-33 advantage in shots and led in shots on goal, 26-18. The Utes caused 11 turnovers, their sixth game this season with 10 or more CTs, and were a perfect 24-of-24 on clearance attempts. Utah won the battle in the faceoff circle, coming away with possession on 16 of 26 tries.
GAME LEADERS
Ryan Stines once again quarterbacked the Utah offense, leading the team with six points on four goals and a pair of assists.
Luke McNamara scored a team-high five goals, becoming the first Division I player this season to net 30 total.
Nathan Chalmers added a career-high four points, logging a pair of scores and two helpers.
Utah was led by junior
Mikey Crane defensively, who paced the squad with three caused turnovers and was the lone Utah Ute to record multiple on the day.
Nikko DiPonio made his presence felt all over the field, tallying a caused turnover and an assist to go with a career-high 11 ground balls. Utah's defense held Marquette, who scored 21 goals last time out, to its lowest scoring total of the season.
Tyler Kloeckl was dominant in the midfield circle, winning 14 of his 20 faceoff tries, while
Colin Lenskold had a strong outing in the cage with 11 saves and five ground balls while earning his fifth win of the season.
FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Utah came out of the gates hot. The Utes put pressure on the Marquette clear early, with
Zachary White forcing a turnover in transition that was scooped up by Stines, who then found McNamara for the first goal of the game. Less than a minute later, Stines scored unassisted to put the Utes up by two.
The Golden Eagles found two goals of their own to tie the game back up, but with 6:00 on the clock,
Luke Haley set up Chalmers behind the net and the sophomore broke free of his defender with a spin move and put the Utes back on top.
Jordan Reed added another for the Utes, finding netting on his first attempt of the day, but Marquette would answer with one more before the horn sounded, giving the Utes a 4-3 edge after 15 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Marquette opened the frame with a goal, but Stines answered back with a stellar one of his own. Starting at X, the redshirt senior cut out from behind the net and fired a behind-the-back laser that fooled the goalie, putting the Utes up 5-4.
After another Golden Eagle goal, White logged a highlight-reel play of his own. Again starting behind the cage, the senior cut to the near side of the field and took a leaping shot from an impossible angle that snuck past the right side of the Marquette keeper.
With 5:24 left to play, Utah showed the strength of its team from one side of the field to the other. Lenskold collected a ground ball in the crease after a blocked shot and got the transition game up and running. After some crisp passes, White found McNamara open on net to put the Utes up 7-5.
Neither side would score again for the rest of the quarter despite an extra-man opportunity for the Utes, and the visitors went into the locker room up by two.
THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Utah shut out the Golden Eagles in the third while scoring six times. After Marquette was flagged for an offside penalty to end the second quarter, Utah started the second half with a man-up chance and White converted. Less than a minute later, Stines capped his fourth hat trick of the season to put the Utes ahead, 9-5.
With 11:27 remaining, Chalmers sent a skip-pass across the field to McNamara who snuck the shot just under the crossbar to tally his hat trick. Six minutes later, Chalmers again set up McNamara for the score to make it a six-goal lead for the Utes.
As time wound down in the quarter, Stines net his fourth goal of the game and after Kloeckl won the ensuing faceoff,
Cade Faulkner found his first of the day to give the Utes a 13-5 lead heading into the fourth.
FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Conner Flanagan capped the 9-0 scoring run by the Utes with a pole goal off the feed from Faulkner to get the scoring started in the fourth. Marquette was able to get on the scoreboard for the first time since the second quarter with 9:55 on the clock, breaking a 32-minute scoreless spell.
Chalmers collected a ground ball off a blocked shot, sent the ball over to Stines, who sent a skip pass in front of net back to Chalmers for his second goal of the day. Kloeckl won the ensuing faceoff and found DiPonio streaking down the middle of the field, and the senior set up McNamara for his fifth goal of the game and his 30th of the season.
Marquette would score once more before the whistle blew, but Utah had done enough to seal its fourth win in a row.
