SAN DIEGO - The University of Utah men's tennis team opened play at the Ed Collins Classic with a hard-fought 4-2 victory over the San Diego State Aztecs. Utah's record moves to 9-4 overall, remaining 1-0 in Big 12 play.
The Utes were led by
Berk Bugarikj, who delivered a standout performance in both singles and doubles play. He dominated his singles match on the top court, defeating Phillipp Bossee 6-1, 6-1, and played a key role in securing the doubles point for Utah.
DOUBLES
The Utes got off to a strong start in doubles play.
Emmett Potter and
Nicolas Calixto secured the first win on court three, defeating Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Paul Janson 6-2.
Berk Bugarikj and
Max Relic followed with a 6-3 victory over Denis Maijorov and Liam Spiers on court two, clinching the doubles point for Utah.
SINGLES
In singles play, Bugarikj extended the Utes' lead with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory over Phillipp Bossee on the top court.
Charles Frey kept the momentum rolling, battling through a tight first set before sealing a 7-5, 6-4 win on court six to push Utah's lead to three.
SDSU pushed back with wins on courts two and four, cutting the lead to 3-2. But Potter delivered in the clutch, overcoming a first-set loss to defeat Spiers 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 on court five, securing the win for Utah.
Dante Teramo was in a tight third set when the match was clinched, leaving his contest unfinished.
UP NEXT
The Utes advance to the semifinals of the Ed Collins Classic, where they will face the winner of No. 2 seed UC Santa Barbara and No. 7 seed Tulane.
