THIS WEEK
The No. 10 Utah Men's Golf team is set to make a quick return to Arizona after the Desert Mountain Collegiate on March 8-9, competing at the 45
th annual Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate for the sixth time in school history. The last time the Utes participated at this tournament was during the 2020-21 season when Utah finished 16
th of 17 teams. Their best performance came in 2015-16 when the Utes ranked 10
th out of 17 teams. It'll be the second tournament in a four-tournament month for the Utes as they head to Statesboro, Georgia on Friday for the Schenkel Invitational.
LAST TIME OUT
The Utes closed out the Desert Mountain Collegiate on March 8-9 with its best round of the tournament, shooting 8-under to finish in second place. The Utes were led by senior
Braxton Watts who posted his lowest score of the season while settling into a tie for second place on the individual leaderboard. Utah used its strongest round of the tournament across the final 18 holes as four of the five golfers earned scores equal or better than the previous best round of the tournament. The Utes' 8-under performance in the final round marks the lowest third-round score by every team but Grand Canyon and Minnesota (8-under), sitting as one of three teams to finish under par. Across the entire tournament, the Utes shot 6-under, just five strokes out of first place.
IN THE RANKS
Utah remained steadily at No. 10 in the latest Scoreboard NCAA rankings this past week, tying the highest ranking in program history after placing second at the Desert Mountain Collegiate. The Utes are one of three Big 12 programs inside the top 10 alongside No. 2 Arizona State and No. 5 Oklahoma State. In the individual rankings, Jimenez ranks as the No. 16 men's college golfer in the country. The Spain native is tied for the most top 3 finishes in the top 50. Jimenez is just one of three Big 12 golfers inside the top 20, alongside Arizona State's Josele Ballester at No. 2 and Oklahoma State's Ethan Fang at No. 6. In total, two Utes are ranked inside the top 100 as
Gabriel Palacios sits at No. 47.
THE FIELD
The field consists of host No. 25 Arizona, California, Hawai'i, Long Beach State, No. 22 Mississippi State, New Mexico State, Northern Illinois, Oregon State, UTEP, Washington State, Wichita State, and Wyoming.
UTAH'S LINE-UP
The Utes look to the same five golfers they have all season to hit the links at the Arizona Thunderbird as
Sergio Jimenez, Gabriel Palacios, Brandon Robison, Davis Johnson, and Braxton Watts are set in the team lineup while freshman
Rex Wilson is set to compete as an individual.
COACHES THOUGHTS
"It's a quick turnaround for our team which is a good thing this time of year," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "I'm excited to see how we compete this coming week. This will be our first time competing at Tucson Country Club so there is a lot of unknown for our team. It was great to see Braxton play so well this past weekend and I'm excited to see how we play this week!"
TOURNAMENT DETAILS
The tournament covers two days' worth of golf, totaling the first 36 holes on Monday before Tuesday encompasses the final round of the tournament. Each day will begin with a 7:30 a.m. MT start.
