SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball team improved its record to 7-3 with a 91-85 victory over the visiting Cal Baptists Lancers inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center Saturday night.
Â
Early in the contest, Utah (7-3) charged ahead of the Lancers with three-consecutive buckets from
Terrence Brown – including a one-handed transition dunk at 16:43 that moved the score to 8-3.Â
Â
Brown provided the spark for the Utes early, netting 11 points in the first 10 minutes of action capped off by a three-pointer at 10:06 that stretched Utah's advantage to 21-16.
Â
The Runnin' Utes continued to push the Lancers and took a 29-20 lead with 5:03 to go in the half on a free-throw from
Don McHenry. However, Cal Baptist (7-3) battled back with a 7-0 run to get within 29-27 with 3:59 remaining in the frame.
Â
Despite constant pressure from Dominique Daniels Jr. and the Cal Baptist squad, Utah maintained its poise as the period closed with McHenry connecting on a last-second three-pointer that broke a tie to give Utah a 41-38 edge at the break.Â
Â
In the opening minutes of the second half, Utah extended its lead with buckets from McHenry and
Keanu Dawes before matching its largest advantage of the contest (9) on a second-chance three-point shot from
Jacob Patrick at the 16:43 mark (51-42).
Â
However, the Lancers did not relent and got within one possession of Utah on a layup from Jonathan Griman that moved the score to 62-61 with 10:37 left in regulation.Â
Â
In the final 10 minutes of action the two teams traded blows as Utah maintained its position in front despite continuous pressure from Cal Baptist.Â
Â
Ahead 85-79 with 1:46 to go, the Lancers got within one-possession of Utah with 56 ticks left in regulation 85-82.Â
Â
With CBU still battling, Patrick buried a tough fadeaway from the free-throw line to give Utah some breathing room and the 87-82 edge with :34 left on the clock. Seconds later, a steal from
James Okonkwo on the ensuing defensive possession sealed the game for Utah as Brown closed out the Utes' 91-85 victory from the free-throw line. Â
Â
The Utes were led by Brown, who stuffed the stat sheet with 27 points, 4 assists, 4 steals and 2 rebounds. McHenry added 21 points of his own to give Utah's starting guard duo a combined total of 48 points.
