Two Utes in Top Five After First Day of the Williams Cup

Gabriel Palacios, Sergio Jimenez tied for fifth place after 18 holes of play
WILMINGTON, N.C. — The No.1 ranked Utah Golf team finished day one of the 54-hole Williams Cup as one of six teams to score even par or better. Individually, Gabriel Palacios and Sergio Jimenez sit within the tournament's top five after Sunday's first 18 holes.
The Utes adapted well to Eagle Point Golf Club (Par 72, 7353 yards), finishing the first round in sixth place overall (even-par, 288) with two players under par at the challenging, Tom Fazio-designed course.
Palacios, who recently debuted as Clippd's top collegiate golfer, was one of the Utes' top day-one performers. The junior from Guatemala began his round with three birdies through the first five holes, taking a 1-under (35) into the back nine before finishing the round with a 2-under (34). With a methodical 3-under-69, Palacios enters day two of the tournament tied for fifth place.
Jimenez matched his teammate's squad-best round, earning a 3-under-69 scorecard of his own after a clean 18 holes. The junior from Spain bogeyed only one hole en route to the Utes' second top-five finish of the day, joining Palacios near the top of the 81-player field.
Davis Johnson and Brandon Robison rounded out Utah's four-player scoring group. Johnson, Clippd's No. 5 collegiate golfer, finished the first day with a 2-over-74 round. Robison closed the day with a 4-over-76. Johnson and Robison enter day two of the tournament in T39 and T63 place, respectively.
Freshman Kade McDonough, playing in his first collegiate tournament, carded an 8-over-79 to round out the Utes' five-man roster.
