COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colo. –
Claire Timmermann of the Utah Ski Team won the first run and was in the top-four for the afternoon, combining her times for a second-place giant slalom finish as the Utes raced at Copper Mountain on Wednesday in the Denver Invitational.
Utah is second in the team standings for the meet with 316 points. The Utes trail only Colorado (379) for the lead.
"It was very cold today," said head alpine coach
JJ Johnson. "Claire was the fastest one on the mountain today. For her to have the slaloms she did, she was strong today in GS. It was impressive. Kaila's ceiling is so high; I'm pretty excited for what she can do. She skied so simple today. And
Evelina Fredricsson had a nice day as well.
"Harry continues to surprise; he made a move to get into the top-30 on the first run. Then he won the second run. Sindre was good as well. All the guys skied pretty dang good on the second run. Simen, Harry and Johs were all top-four on the second run."
Combined between the men and women, Utah had five individual results in the top-nine. Today's GS races concluded the alpine portion of the Denver Invitational. Teams will continue the RMISA schedule with other meets in the meantime, with the Nordic portion of the Denver Invitational set to take place on February 8 and 9.
Women's Race
Helped by winning the first run,
Claire Timmermann (1:36.54) was second in the final results and earned her second collegiate podium. It was Timmermann's best finish as a Ute for a GS race; her other podium was a bronze in GS during the 2023 RMISA Championships. In addition to winning the first run, Timmermann's final placement was aided by a top-four run in the afternoon.
Including Timmermann, all of Utah's scoring in the women's race came in the top-seven.
Making her third start as a Ute,
Evelina Fredricsson contributed a top-five result (1:36.89) after her opening run was top-three in the field.
Kaila Lafreniere also scored for Utah, placing seventh (1:37.30).
Timmermann said post-race, "I'm happy with how this week went; it went well. Always nice to snag a podium. I'm also super stoked on our performance as a team. It's a great way to start the season."
Kaja Norbye added a 13
th-place finish while
Melanie Dahlberg rounded out the Utah finishers in 15
