GIRDWOOD, Alaska –
Claire Timmermann and
Johs Braathen Herland each recorded second-place giant slalom finishes as the Utah Ski Team opened up the RMISA Championships on Thursday at Alyeska Resort.
After one day of racing, Utah has the early lead in the team standings with 178 points. It is a 32-point advantage on Colorado (146) with Montana State (137) rounding out the top-three.
Women's Race
Utah scored a meet-leading 97 women's GS points, with
Claire Timmermann on the podium taking silver (1:27.87).
Kaila Lafreniere was fourth (1:28.52) and
Kaja Norbye placed in the top-five (1:28.89).
That Utah trio of Timmermann, Lafreniere and Norbye all finished in the top-five while no other team had more than two finishers in the top-10. All three Utes were in the top-six at flip time, including a second-best opening run for Norbye (43.42 seconds). Timmermann's opening run of 43.91 seconds was third in the field.
Timmermann secured her second straight podium and fourth of the season thanks to a second run that was second-fastest, elapsing 43.96 seconds. Lafreniere was top-five on the second run (44.38 seconds).
Men's Race
Johs Braathen Herland edged Montana State's Jamie Casselman for silver, with Herland clocking a combined time of 1:23.47—an advantage of two hundredths of a second.
Simen Strand was seventh for Utah (1:24.28) and
Raphael Lessard climbed five spots after the flip to finish 12
th (1:24.42) and close out the scoring for the Utes. Altogether, the team combined for 81 points, placing second in the men's team standings.
Sindre Myklebust was 14
th.
Herland put down an opening run of 41.29 seconds, third-best in the field. Lessard was 17
th at the break, but used a third-fastest second run of 41.77 to jump up to 12
th.

Both alpine and Nordic members of the Utah Ski Team will be competing on Friday in Alaska. Alpine will remain at Alyeska Resort but switch to slalom as the Utes wrap up the Alaska Anchorage Invitational.
Meanwhile in the Nordic world, Utah will continue the RMISA Championships with a 7.5K classic interval start. Both the men's and women's races will take place at Kincaid Park in Girdwood, Alaska.
