Head Coach Gavin Petersen
Overall Statement
"Great bounce back win after a tough loss to K-State. We had to get back to the drawing boards and attack. It took us a little while but I'm proud of our effort. We had a season high 19 offensive rebounds and that was something we've been preaching about. We went from six assists last game to 22 tonight and that's more on par with Utah basketball. We knew Houston was going to come in and play hard and they always compete. Regardless of their record they are going to show up and give you their best shot. Overall, really proud of our effort."
On Mayé Touré . . .
"I think Mayé is the type of player that's mature and skilled. She has so much potential and still has so much more to tap into. She's a student of the game and is always in my office asking questions, asking to watch film and willing to grow. We hold her to a higher standard and we're going to keep pushing that standard and keep pushing her to get better. She is capable of elevating. She's going to be scary come March."
Gianna Kneepkens, junior, guard
On the offensive improvement. . .
"We just have to have the mindset that 'I believe in myself and my teammates and every shot is going in.' Against Kansas State, we started missing shots and got tight and we started rushing and losing our spacing. We had to switch up our mindset to focus on the little things and not hyper focusing on our missed shots."
Mayé Touré, graduate, forward
On the team's rebounding efforts. . .
"I think rebounding is a great tool for us because we have great guards. If everyone is crashing it opens more opportunities for us to score and give us chances to hit more from the perimeter. When we're hitting threes, it's a great day for us."
On syncing with the team chemistry . . .
"I think practicing together and getting adapted to the system more has been a big help for me. My teammates are great and learn how to play with me every day. They put me in a great position to score. I couldn't do that by myself. It's just the team chemistry we've been building with time and it's just going to keep growing."
UP NEXT
Utah will continue Big 12 play by hitting the road to take on Baylor on Jan. 14 before heading to TCU Jan. 18. The Utes will return to the Jon M. Huntsman Center, Wednesday, Jan. 22 to take on Kansas.
