UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Utah women's basketball moves to 3-2 overall on the season after falling 61-49 to Syracuse in the first game of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase on Friday evening.
GAME SUMMARY Syracuse started the game off with back-to-back threes to put the Utes in an early six point deficit. The Orange then went on a two minute scoring drought where the Utes pushed through to capture a one point lead. The two teams were even at the end of the initial 10 minutes of play with a 12-12 score.
Early in the second quarter Utah strung together a 7-0 run thanks in large part to a pair of threes by Maty Wilke. The Utes were able to hold onto a 25-21 lead going into the half.
Coming out of halftime Syracuse captured the momentum with an 8-0 run. Syracuse continued to maintain for a 42-39 lead at the end of the third quarter. The Orange outscored the Utes 21-14 in the third quarter. Syracuse continued control for the entirety of the fourth quarter to run away with the 61-49 victory over Utah.
LEADERS The Utes had two score in double figures and were led by Maty Wilke's 18 points including four knocked down from beyond the arc. Chyra Evans posted 13 points going 6-of-9 from the field. Reese Ross and Lani White each added seven points to help out the total on the scoreboard.
Ross was a powerhouse on the boards pulling down seven. With her seven rebounds, Ross breached 300 total career rebounds.
Brooke Walker led the Utes with five assists on the night while LA Sneed added four.
COMPARISON Utah shot 36.5% from the field while Syracuse shot 32.4% from the field. Utah went 22.7% from three making 5-of-22 while Syracuse went 31.6% shooting 6-of-19.
Utah and Syracuse both posted 15 assists. The Orange outrebounded the Utes 49-31. Syracuse had 24 offensive rebounds to Utah's six. Utah finished the game with 21 turnovers while Syracuse finished with 17.
UP NEXT Utah will conclude the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase taking on No. 1 UConn on Sunday Nov. 23 at 12:30 p.m. (MT). The Utes return to the Huntsman Center on Nov. 26 to face off against in-state foe Weber State at 7 p.m.
