 General
Tonight's game snapped a five-game home winning streak for Utah when playing BYU at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Prior to tonight, the Utes had not lost at home to BYU since Nov. 25, 2006.
This was the 250th game for Kyle Whittingham as Utah's head coach and 376th at Utah including his time as an assistant coach (1994-2004).
Utah won the time of possession battle, 30:10 to 29:50, and has had the upper hand in TOP in seven of nine games this season.
Tonight's attendance of 54,383 is a new facility record for Rice-Eccles Stadium and is the 88th straight sellout. The sellout streak dates back to the 2010 season opener vs. Pitt and the attendance tonight surpasses the prior record of 53,644 for the Florida game in 2023.
Prior to now, Utah had not lost five consecutive games since the 2013 season.
BYU won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. The Utes defended the North goal to begin the game.
 Offense
Utah's 21 points in the second quarter were the most in a quarter for the team since the second quarter against Southern Utah (28) on August 29.
In the first quarter, Utah had -2 passing yards as a team. The Utes followed that with 89 passing yards in the second quarter.
Quarterback Brandon Rose made his first collegiate start, passing 12-for-21 for 112 yards with two touchdowns, no sacks and one interception. Rose also kept the ball seven times for 55 yards (7.9 ypc) with no negative rushing yardage.
Running back Micah Bernard had 17 carries for 78 yards, eclipsing 2,000 career rushing yards during the game. Bernard now has 2,068 yards as a Ute.
Wide receiver Dorian Singer surpassed 150 career catches during the first half. It includes Singer's prior stints at Arizona (2021-22) and USC (2023).
Rose threw his first collegiate touchdown pass to tight end Brant Kuithe on a 20-yard strike in the second quarter. It was also Kuithe's sixth touchdown reception of the season (second straight game) and 22nd of his career.
Later in the second quarter, Kuithe lined up out of the wildcat and rushed for a one-yard touchdown. It is the second time this season (at Oklahoma State) that Kuithe has both rushed for and caught a touchdown in the same game. Tonight's performance made him the first Ute since John White (vs. Washington State, 2012) to do so in the same quarter.
Kuithe has caught a pass in 41 straight games he has played in. It is the longest active streak among current FBS tight ends and fourth-longest active streak among all active FBS players.
Rose hit Singer with a 36-yard completion during the second quarter; it was Rose's longest completion as a Ute.
Bernard clocked a seven-yard touchdown with 1:46 on the second quarter clock after he met the pylon on the play. It was Bernard's second receiving touchdown of the season (vs. Baylor) and fifth of his career.
 Defense
As a team, Utah set a season-high with 9.0 TFL. It is the most for the Utes since the game at Oregon State on Sept. 29, 2023 (13.0).
Utah also broke up nine passes on the night. It was the most for the team since the game at USC on Oct. 9, 2021 (10).
Utah held the Cougars to just three yards rushing in the second quarter, the third time this season that the Utes have held an opponent to five or less yards in a quarter (2 yds in the fourth vs. Baylor; 5 yds in the second at Oklahoma State).
Linebacker Karene Reid tied a season-high with nine tackles and tied his career-bests both with 2.0 TFL and 1.0 sack.
Fellow linebacker Lander Barton set a career-high with two pass breakups, while defensive end Van Fillinger tied his career-high (2 PBU).
Cornerback Zemaiah Vaughn had career-highs both with 3.0 TFL and 1.0 sack. His TFL total doubled his previous career-high and marked the first 3.0 TFL game by a Utah secondary player since safety Sione Vaki at Oregon State in 2023.
Defensive end Logan Fano had 1.5 TFL to set a new career-high as well.
Reid has made six-plus tackles in four straight games and seven-plus tackles in three straight games.
 Special Teams
Punter Jack Bouwmeester averaged 48.3 yards on his six punts, with a long of 59 yards and two for 50-plus yards. He also pinned BYU inside their 20-yard line on five of his six punts.
Tonight was Bouwmeester's fourth game of the season with multiple 50-yard punts.
Bouwmeester has 11 punts this season for 50-plus yards and 31 in his career. He also has landed 16 punts inside the 20-yard line this season and 53 in his career.
Playing on the kick return team, Smith Snowden logged his first collegiate kick return during the second quarter (36 yards).
