Postgame Notes (at) No. 19 Oregon State 21, No. 10 Utah 7 Corvallis, Ore. (Reser Stadium) Friday, September 29, 2023 Kick: 6:05 p.m. PT | End: 9:22 p.m. Attendance: 37,372 (sellout)
 General
Utah is 4-1 through its first five games for the second consecutive season.
Prior to tonight, Utah had not trailed after the first quarter since Jan. 2, 2023 in the Rose Bowl vs. Penn State (7-0).
Oregon State won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. Utah defended the South goal to begin the game.
Offense
Quarterback Nate Johnson made his third collegiate start, passing 8-of-23 for 101 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions.Â
Safety Sione Vaki checked in on offense during Utah's opening drive and took a direct snap, rushing for six yards and a first down. It was Vaki's first career offensive yardage as a Ute.
Running back Jaylon Glover had a 20-yard rush during the second quarter; it was one yard short of tying Glover's season-long.
For the first time since 2021 at San Diego State, the Utes were held under 100 rushing yards in a game (57). It ends a streak of 29 consecutive games in which Utah had at least 100 rushing yards as a team.
Utah was held scoreless in the first half; it is the first time the Utes have been shutout in any half since 2020 (second half at Washington) and first time it's occurred in the first half since the 2019 Alamo Bowl vs. Texas.
Defense
Defensive end Jonah Elliss contributed 2.0 sacks on the night and has at least 1.0 sack in three of five games this season.
Elliss is the first Ute since 2016 to have two-plus sacks in consecutive games (3.5 vs. UCLA, 2.0 at Oregon State). In 2016, Hunter Dimick had 5.0 at Arizona State and 2.0 vs. Oregon the following week.Â
Linebacker Lander Barton broke up a third-down pass attempt during the second quarter; it was Barton's first PBU since the Florida game.
Safety Sione Vaki reset his career-high with 3.5 TFL in the game. He previously had 2.0 TFL vs. UCLA in 2023 and at Colorado in 2022.
Vaki's nine tackles tied a career-best for the second straight week. He led the team in tackles for the third time in his career (9 at Washington State in 2022; 8 vs. Penn State in 2022).
Fellow safety Cole Bishop made his second interception of the season (third of his career) during the fourth quarter. His last interception came at Baylor in Week 2.
Oregon State's touchdown on its game-opening drive marked the first opening drive score for a Utah opponent since USC in the 2022 Pac-12 Championship.
Utah has recorded a defensive takeaway in all five games this season.
Special Teams
Punter Jack Bouwmeester had a 52-yard punt early in the second quarter and landed two of his punts inside the Oregon State 20-yard line.
Bouwmeester has sent nine of his punts for 50-plus yards this season.
