SPRING SEES STIFF COMPETITION
Utah soccer will begin the spring season playing seven ranked teams in nine games. The Utes opened the season against then-No. 10 BYU and followed by playing then-No. 15 Washington State on the road for a pair of matches. The Utes opened the Pac-12 slate against then-No. 23 Stanford and then-No. 10 California. Not stopping there, Utah prepares to host the ranked pair of teams from Los Angeles to continue Pac-12 play and the challenging start to the 2021 spring season.
SCOUTING USC
USC comes into the weekend off wins against Oregon State and Oregon. The Trojans also knocked off then No. 10 BYU 4-3 in overtime in the team's season-opening match. Penelope Hocking, a 2019 All-Pac-12 and All-Pacific Region first team selection, leads the Trojans with three goals on the year, while All-American and reigning Pac-12 Forward of the Year Tara McKeown has tallied two goals. The Trojan duo combined to score 33 of USC's 47 goals last season. USC is coming off an NCAA Tournament run that saw their 2019 campaign end in the quarterfinals.

SCOUTING UCLA
UCLA is undefeated in the 2021 spring season and is ranked third in the nation. The Bruins have had four shutouts this year and have notable wins over then-No. 25 Pepperdine, then-No. 10 BYU and then-No. 20 Oregon. Mia Fishel and Sunshine Fontes have each posted four goals on the season to pace the offense, while Lauren Brzykcy has grabbed 21 saves and allowed just three goals. Coming off a College Cup appearance where the team reached the semifinals, UCLA returns six starters from the 2019 season and welcomed the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation.

LAST TIME OUT
Utah traveled to the Bay Area to take on Stanford and California. The Utes fell 5-0 to Stanford to begin the weekend and ended the trip with a 1-0 loss at Cal. The Ute defense let up a pair of goals early on, while the Cardinal were able to deny Utah's offense and went on to tack on a few more goals toward the end of the match. On Sunday against Cal, Utah tightened up the defensive efforts and played the No. 10-ranked team wire to wire. A goal from Cal toward the end of the first half would be the game winner despite Utah getting up last chance efforts, including a rip by
Taliana Kaufusi that hit the top crossbar in the 89th minute.

UP NEXT
