For the first time since 1916, Utah defeated USC in Los Angeles. It snaps an eight-game road losing streak in LA, and is the first Utes victory inside the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum (opened 1923).
Four of Utah's seven wins over the Trojans have come during the month of October, including the 1916 road triumph.
Utah is 2-0 in Pac-12 play for the first time since starting the 2015 season with a 3-0 mark in conference action.
Head coach Kyle Whittingham recorded his 137th career victory at the helm of the Utes, and is now just four wins away from tying the school record of 141 by Ike Armstrong (141-55-15; 1925-49).
Utah won the coin toss, deferred to the second half, and elected to defend the West goal.
Offense
Utah surpassed its most points scored in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum--previously 27 points in the 2017 game at USC (L 28-27).
Sophomore quarterback Cameron Rising made his second consecutive start and third of his Utah career. Rising finished 22-of-28 passing for a career-high 306 yards, becoming the first Utah QB since Tyler Huntley (Nov. 16, 2019) to pass for 300-plus yards.
Rising's top two passing performances as a Ute have come in his home state of California (153 yards at San Diego State).
On the night, Rising completed seven passes of 15-plus yards (total 192 passing yards), including a 37-yard touchdown strike to Devaughn Vele.
Junior tight end Brant Kuithe produced his first rushing touchdown of the season on his first rushing attempt. It was Kuithe's fourth rushing score of his career and first since Nov. 30, 2019 vs. Colorado.
Prior to Saturday, that 2019 game vs. Colorado also marked the last time a Utah tight end had a rushing touchdown.
In the second quarter, Rising connected with senior wide receiver Theo Howard for 42 yards, a career-long pass for Rising and Howard's longest reception as a Ute.
Two Utes reeled in their first career touchdown receptions in the second quarter in wide receivers Money Parks (12 yards) and Vele (37 yards).
Rising's deep ball to Vele for the touchdown was the longest touchdown pass of Rising's collegiate career. The play also came on fourth down, the first such touchdown for Utah since Ty Jordan rushed 33 yards for a score on a fourth down vs. Washington State in 2020.
Parks' score came on his first catch with Utah.
Sophomore running back Tavion Thomas opened the third quarter with a 43-yard rushing touchdown, a career-long run for Thomas.
Utah had four touchdown drives of 75-plus yards (8-75, 5-75, 7-77, 5-75). The last time the Utes accomplished this feat was in 2019 vs. UCLA, when the squad drove 75 or more yards for a TD five times in a 49-3 win at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
For the second time this season, three different Utes had a receiving touchdown (Kincaid, Parks, Vele).
The last time Utah had multiple rushing touchdowns not scored by a running back was in 2019, when Kuithe had a pair vs. Arizona.
Across the board, six Utes found the end zone with either a receiving or rushing touchdown. Utah last accomplished that feat in 2019 vs. UCLA.
Defense
Freshman safety Kamo'i Latu (10 tackles) surpassed his previous career-high of two stops.
Senior safety Vonte Davis recorded his third career interception and first since Dec. 5, 2020 against Oregon State. Davis' pick in the third quarter came back 30 yards after the fourth-down takeaway.
Junior linebacker Devin Lloyd (8 tackles, 6 solo; 1.0 TFL) has recorded at least one tackle for loss in 12 of the last 13 games.
Freshman cornerback Clark Phillips IIIlogged a career-high three pass breakups.
Junior defensive end Mika Tafua had two sacks, a career-best, and recorded his third straight game with at least one sack.
Utah has held its opponents scoreless on opening drives in all five games this season. It includes drives ending in punts (Weber State, BYU, San Diego State, USC) and one turnover on downs (Washington State).
For the seventh straight game, Utah had at least one player record 10 or more tackles. It dates back to the Dec. 12, 2020 game at Colorado.
USC had 11 full possessions, and Utah allowed the Trojans to move just 39 yards or fewer on six of those possessions. That included four in a row (3, 13, 28 and 37 yards; 3 punts and one turned over on downs) from the late second quarter until the early fourth quarter, during which time Utah extended its lead from 14-10 to 35-10.
Special Teams
For the first time in his career, freshman punter Cameron Peasley pinned two punts inside the opponent's 20-yard line.
