LAST TIME OUT
Utah sent Sims to compete at the UW Last Chance meet in an effort to gain familiarity with the venue and be better prepared for the championship meet this weekend. At the Last Chance, Sims competed in the long jump where she leaped a distance of 5.36m (17'7.0") on her fourth attempt.Â
Sims also posted a new PR (8.58) in the 60m hurdles to place second and jump from fourth to second all-time in school history. Capping of the meet, Sims ran in the 800m race and registered a time of 2:20.12 — good for seventh.Â
Owning the 11th-best DMR time nationally, head coach Kyle Kepler opted to send a DMR squad out to Winston-Salem, N.C., to try and record a faster time in hopes of earning a qualifying time to race at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Running on the "Fastest 200m Flat Track in the Country" at the JDL DMR Invite, the Utes stepped on the track against a tough field and clocked a season's best time of 11:17.81 to secure a fifth-place finish.Â
After applying the NCAA flat track conversion, the DMR time was reduced by 7.18 seconds to 11:10.63, and now ranks second all-time in Utah history. Utah athletes running in the DMR were Caitlin Faust, Jackie Martin, Brooke Manson and Sarah Newton. Â
UP NEXT
The NCAA Indoor Championships only take the top-16 individual and top-12 relay times. Currently ranked 16th in the DMR, the Utes are hopeful they can record qualifying times and send athletes to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., March 13-14.Â
LOOKING FORWARD
After the conclusion of the indoor season, the Utes will begin their outdoor campaign in San Luis Obispo, Calif., at the Mustang Classic hosted by Cal Poly, March 20-21. Â
