Utah is 16-8 overall this season and 2-4 in Pac-12 play, jumping back in the ITA Team Rankings this week at No. 45. Utah also has two athletes ranked in the top-90 with
Dan Little landing at No. 42 and
David Micevski coming in at No. 85.
The Utes played three home matches last week, winning two that included knocking off the No. 12 Stanford Cardinal in front of a huge crowd on Senior Day. After Utah's match against the Cardinal, Little improved to 6-1 this season against ranked opponents in singles play, earning his second Pac-12 Player of the Week nod this year.
After securing the doubles point against Stanford on Sunday, Utah got right to work in singles play, with Little putting the Utes up 2-0 after beating No. 47 Alexandre Rotsaert. Stanford put together two wins on courts five and six to tie it up 2-2, but the Utes continued to fight with Micevski coming away with a ranked win of his own, beating No. 110 William Genesen at No. 2 singles to take a 3-2 lead in the match.
It came down to courts three and four with both
Russell Benkaim and
Slava Shainyan battling to third sets, it turned into a race to see who would finish first. Shainyan won the first set, lost the second and then was tied 4-4 in the third, but Benkaim put together a gritty performance on court four to clinch the win for the Utes.
After losing his first set 6-2, Benkaim won the second in a tiebreaker and then put together a 6-2 victory in the third to nab Utah's fourth point of the match and the victory over their ranked foe. It was Utah's sixth match against a top-50 team this season and their third win over a ranked opponent.
