SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's tennis team was able to knock off the 28
thranked Washington State Cougars earlier today with a final score of 4-3. With this win, the Utes will move to 8-2 on the season, and start off Pac-12 conference play 1-0.
"I felt like it was an awesome college tennis match out there today between two very good teams," said head coach
Mat Iandolo. "I can't say enough about the entire team effort because everybody who played contributed to the win, in either singles or doubles. Also, what else can you say about
Madison Tattini stepping up as a freshman and winning the clinching point, I'm so proud of her and the whole team."
The Utes were able to start their day off strong as they were able to earn the doubles point against Washington State. After dropping the first match on court No. 2, Utah was able to rally behind a comeback started at the No. 1 position by
Brianna Chisholm and
Madison Tattini, as they upset the 71
stranked doubles team of Tiffany Mylonas and Hikaru Sato with a score of 6-3. Then at the No. 3 spot to seal the point for the Utes,
Emily Dush and
Anya Lamoreaux were able to defeat Jovana Knezevic and Aneta Miksovska with a score of 6-4.
Leah Heimuli then kept things rolling on the No. 5 court in singles, topping Aneta Miksovska 6-4, 6-2.
Whitney Hekking shortly followed with a victory of her own at the No. 4 position, edging out Savanna Ly-Nguyen with a final score of 7-6, 6-2. With the score then tied up at 3-3, freshman
Madison Tattini was able to pull off a clutch victory at the No. 2 spot, coming back against Hikaru Sato with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 7-6, to give the Utes the 4-3 win and upset the No. 28 ranked Cougars.
The University of Utah women's tennis team will be back in action this Sunday, March 10
th, as they will continue opening up Pac-12 conference play against the University of Washington. The match against the No. 7 ranked Huskies is set to take place at the Eccles Tennis Center at 11 a.m. MT.
