SEATTLE - Ireland Dunn's goal at the half-hour mark was enough as
Carly Nelson and Utah's defense held up for a 1-0 win at No. 21 Washington this afternoon
"It was a great team win and to come to this place and get it done is a fantastic result," head coach
Rich Manning said. "We have struggled lately with results but these players keep fighting and it is nice to see us get rewarded for that."
Some poor play in the back by UW allowed Dunn a chance to pounce and the senior made it count. She dribbled away from a pair of Huskies and circled the goalkeeper before tapping in her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Dunn also leads the Utes this season in total points and last year at home, she scored against Washington in a 2-0 win.
"Ireland has been playing good soccer through the course of the season and it has been great to see her continue to play well and get goals," Manning added.
Washington racked up 12 corners and 24 shots in the contest, but the eight on frame were all denied by
Carly Nelson.
"Carly is a big presence on our team and they all feed off her confidence and play," Manning said. "It showed again today with three fantastic saves. She kept everyone calm at the end of the game and definitely delivered a huge performance.
With today's performance, Nelson becomes the first Ute in almost two decades to top 100 saves in a single season. She also ranks fifth all-time with 268 career stops. Her 22
nd shutout of her career was her ninth this season, matching the single-season mark set by Lindsey Luke in 2013. Nelson entered the weekend tops in the Pac-12 in saves, shutouts and minutes.
"It was a great defensive performance," Manning said. "Our backs had some athletic players coming at them and were able to win crosses and entry passes. That made a big impact in the contest."
"We are relentless," Nelson added. " When obstacles come our way, we persevere and are able to respond to challenges."
Two of today's starters,
Tavia Leachman and
Aleea Gwerder started in 2016 as freshmen and played the full 90 minutes when the Utes won 1-0 in Seattle. The duo did the trick again today as the Utes picked up a win over a Top 25 team on the road for the second time in five tries.
Utah hosts Colorado in the regular season finale on Thursday at 7 p.m. The game will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks
