SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah men's tennis team is set to host a pair of matches on Saturday, Jan. 19 for its home opening weekend. The Utes will take on Weber State at 9 a.m. and then Montana State at 3 p.m. in the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.
Saturday will be "Meet the Utes" day in the Eccles Tennis Center with free admission to both matches. The matches against Weber State and Montana State will both be streamed on UtahUtes.com with a full recap of the day's events available following the completion of competition on UtahUtes.com.
Fans can also follow along with the action on Twitter (@UtahTennis) and Instagram (@UtahTennis) for live updates.
Utah opened the season on the road against BYU, but unfortunately didn't come away with a win, falling 4-0. After Utah's upcoming home weekend, they will hit the road again for a pair of games in Chapel Hill, N.C. before returning to Salt Lake City to take on Northern Arizona on Feb. 2.
Under the direction of Roeland Brateanu, the Utes are undefeated against Weber State and Montana State, beating them both in each of the last four seasons. Last year, Utah came away with a 7-0 rout of Montana State while also taking down Weber State 5-2.
Despite the tough loss at BYU, the Utes got to see a new face in the line-up, with Mathias Gavelin playing at the No. 5 spot. The Utes returned most of its line-up from last season with Dan Little playing at No. 1, Slava Shainyan at No. 2, Randy Cory at No. 3, Russell Benkaim at No. 4 and Joe Woolley at No. 6.
Utah is coming off one of its best seasons in history, winning 19 dual matches to rank as high as No. 24 nationally and first in the Mountain Region. They advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1997 with head coach Roeland Brateanu winning the ITA Mountain Region Coach of the Year for the second straight season.
