SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah men's tennis team will be back in action this week, as they will head down to Albuquerque, New Mexico, for two matches. They will first face off against the University of New Mexico (4-2) on Friday, February 23
rd, at 3 p.m. This will be followed by a match against UC Santa Barbara (5-2) on Saturday, February 24
th, at 11 a.m., to wrap up competition for the weekend.
"The next 3 weekends are going to tell us what we are really made out of and what we will be doing in May," said head coach
Roeland Brateanu. "Both New Mexico and UCSB are great teams and we look forward to the challenges they bring."
Utah Notes
The Utes are coming off a weekend consisting of three wins against Boise State, UC Irvine, and Montana. The University of Utah men's tennis team defeated Boise State with a final score of 4-0. The Utes started off the night by taking the doubles point against the Broncos.
Egbert Weverink and
Joe Woolley got things started on the No. 2 court, defeating Stefan Lalovic and Pedro Platzeck with a score of 6-1.
Randy Cory and
Russell Benkaim then sealed the doubles point with a win over Kyle Butters and Jack Heslin at the No. 1 position, finishing with a final score of 6-2. In singles,
Dan Little was dominant at the No. 2 spot, defeating Matteo Tinelli with a final score of 6-1, 6-3.
Santiago Sierra then followed with a win at the No. 4 position, beating out Mattia Bedolo with a score of 6-3, 6-1.
Joe Woolley then sealed the victory for the Utes on the No. 6 court, edging out Stefan Lalovic, 6-4, 6-2, to give the Utah men's tennis team the win. Against UC Irvine, the Utes came away with a 6-1 victory over the Anteaters. the Utes were able to capture the doubles point against the Anteaters.

Egbert Weverink got things started with a win over Luis Lopez and Daniel Gealer at the No. 2 spot, with a score of 7-5.
Dan Little and
Azat Hankuliyev then sealed the doubes point after defeating Victor Casadevall and Ignacio Tejerina at the No. 3 positon, with a final score of 6-1. In singles,
Randy Cory recorded the first win for the Utes, beating out Vatsal Bajpai, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot.
David Micevski shorty followed with a win of his own at the No. 1 position, with a victory over Luca Marquad, 6-1, 6-1. On the No. 5 court,
Santiago Sierra then kept things rolling with a 6-1, 6-3, win over Daniel Gealer. To finish things off and give the Utes the win,
Dan Little came away with a 7-6, 6-3, victory at the No. 2 spot over Luis Lopez, along with
Joe Woolley coming up with a 6-4, 6-3, win at the No. 6 spot over Antoine Barthe. Later in the day against the University of Montana, the Utes were also able to earn the doubles point.

Egbert Weverink cruised to a 6-0 win over Yannick Schmidl and Alexander Canellopoulos at the No. 2 spot. They were then followed by
Dan Little and
Azat Hankuliyev, who defeated Victor Casadevall and Ignacio Tejerina with a score of 6-1 on the No. 3 court to give the Utah men's tennis team the early advantage. In singles,

Slava Shainyan,
Randy Cory, and
Santiago Sierra were all able to win in straight sets for the Utes.
Joe Woolley then provided the final win of the night, coming out on top in a competitive match against Ludvig Hallgren on the No. 6 court, finishing with a score of 6-4, 6-7, 10-3.
Opponent Notes
The University of New Mexico is coming off of a 4-3 victory against Drake University. The day started off with a loss by Lobos Bart Van Leijsen and Jorge Escutia in the first flight doubles against Drake's Vinny Gillespie and Barny Thorold by a score of 6-4. Fortunately, this was followed by back-to-back wins by third flight Stepan Holis and Sean Baklini against Finley Hall and Tom Hands by a score of 6-3, and second flight Dominic West and Ricky Hernandez-Tong against Ben Clark and Ben Wood by a score of 7-5 to earn the doubles point for the Lobos. In singles play, the teams went back and forth between wins with first flight Van Leijsen falling to Gillespie, 6-3, 6-4, and Holis responding with a 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 win against Wood in the fifth flight. Fourth flight Escutia then fell to Clark, 6-2, 6-4, but Baklini was able to pick up a win against Freddie Powell in the sixth flight. Unfortunately, West was unable to get a win against Drake's Thorold, and the match was tied with only second flight Hernandez-Tong left to play against Hands. After falling 3-6 in the first set and winning the second 6-4, Hernandez was down 0-4 in the match-deciding set; however, Hernandez-Tong was able to come back from behind and get the victory for the Lobos, winning the set 6-4.
UC Santa Barbara is coming off of a 5-2 win over the University of the Pacific over the past weekend. The day began with a big matchup on the No. 1 court for doubles as juniors Nicolas Moreno de Alboran and Anders Holm took on the No. 24 pair in the country comprised of Akram El Sallaly and Bernardo Oliveira. The match began with the UCSB pair being broken early. At 2-2, however, Moreno de Alboran and Holm turned the tide as at duece point, Moreno de Alboran had an ace serve to take the point. The Gaucho couplet would go on to win the game, 6-4. Before they won, Freund and redshirt freshman Joseph Rotheram had defeated Pacific's Watson/Khachatryan easily, 6-2, to give the Gauchos the doubles point and the early 1-0 lead. the first win in singles came courtesy of Rotheram in the No. 6 court as he blew past Pacific's Horoz defeating him 6-2, 6-2. It was his second victory of the season. On court two, Freund took the first set versus Ross Watson easily, 6-0. He held a very advantagouos 3-0 lead in the second set, but credit to Watson for never giving up and tying the set at 3-3. The sweden native would go on to still take the set and the match, however, giving the home team a 3-0 lead. For the second consecutive day, Moreno de Alboran sealed the win for UCSB with his game-clinching victory on court one. The No. 75 player in the country had a tough match against El Sallaly but he managed to pull away with a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
