Utes Improve to 12-1 with Victories Against UC Irvine and Montana

SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah men's tennis team recorded two victories today, beating out UC Irvine with a score of 6-1, and then sweeping the University of Montana with a score of 7-0. With this win, the Utes move to 12-1 on the season.
"I think that this was a very good weekend," said head coach Roeland Brateanu. "We had three great wins, I thought we came out and played alright, but we took care of business. We're now 12-1 and that sets a school record, and we're looking forward to a tough three week stretch."
To start the day off against UC Irvine, the Utes were able to capture the doubles point against the Anteaters. Joe Woolley and Egbert Weverink got things started with a win over Luis Lopez and Daniel Gealer at the No. 2 spot, with a score of 7-5. Dan Little and Azat Hankuliyev then sealed the doubes point after defeating Victor Casadevall and Ignacio Tejerina at the No. 3 positon, with a final score of 6-1.
In singles, Randy Cory recorded the first win for the Utes, beating out Vatsal Bajpai, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot. David Micevski shorty followed with a win of his own at the No. 1 position, with a victory over Luca Marquad, 6-1, 6-1. On the No. 5 court, Santiago Sierra then kept things rolling with a 6-1, 6-3, win over Daniel Gealer. To finish things off and give the Utes the win, Dan Little came away with a 7-6, 6-3, victory at the No. 2 spot over Luis Lopez, along with Joe Woolley coming up with a 6-4, 6-3, win at the No. 6 spot over Antoine Barthe.
Later in the day against the University of Montana, the Utes were also able to earn the doubles point. Joe Woolley and Egbert Weverink cruised to a 6-0 win over Yannick Schmidl and Alexander Canellopoulos at the No. 2 spot. They were then followed by Dan Little and Azat Hankuliyev, who defeated Victor Casadevall and Ignacio Tejerina with a score of 6-1 on the No. 3 court to give the Utah men's tennis team the early advantage.
In singles, Dan Little, David Micevski, Slava Shainyan, Randy Cory, and Santiago Sierra were all able to win in straight sets for the Utes. Joe Woolley then provided the final win of the night, coming out on top in a competitive match against Ludvig Hallgren on the No. 6 court, finishing with a score of 6-4, 6-7, 10-3.
The University of Utah men's tennis team will be back in action on February 23rd, as they will travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to take on the University of New Mexico. Followed by a match against UC Santa Barbara on February 24th, with the times for these matches yet to be determined.
