TEMPE, Ariz. – It was a tough outing for the University of Utah football program at Arizona State today as the Utes fell to the Sun Devils, 38-20, snapping their four-game winning streak. Utah is 6-3 overall and 4-3 in Pac-12 play this season.
The Utes struggled to get going on both offense and defense, accumulating just 325 yards on offense while giving up 536. With Arizona State averaging 15 yards per completion and 7.2 yards per play on offense, Utah struggled to get any momentum going during the game.
Tyler Huntley finished the game 7-for-15 passing for 88 yards and a touchdown along with 42 rushing yards before leaving the game in the third quarter with an injury. Jason Shelley was 4-for-11 passing for 59 yards.
Zack Moss notched his sixth 100-yard rushing game of the season, racking up 128 yards on 18 carries, running in one touchdown. The junior passed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the second straight season, becoming just the fourth Ute to achieve two 1,000-yard rushing seasons in a career, giving him 1,092 on the season.
On defense, the Utes had two double-digit tacklers with Corrion Ballard and Cody Barton chipping in 12 tackles each. Ballard's career-high 12 tackles included nine solo tackles.
Matt Gay knocked in two field goals, scoring 40-yard and 31-yard field goals while Mitch Wishnowsky averaged a season-high 51 yards on punts. Wishnowsky also had a season-long 60-yard punt against the Sun Devils.
Utah stopped Arizona State on a third-and-goal situation on the Sun Devils' first drive of the game, but a targeting call on the Utes extended the drive, resulting in a touchdown. The six-yard rushing touchdown put ASU up 7-0 with 10:12 to go in the first quarter, ending an 11-plya, 75-yard drive.
Luck stayed on Arizona State's side as they came up with an interception just outside of the end zone on Utah's offensive drive, returning it for 47 yards to set up their next touchdown. After seven plays and 53 yards, N'Keal Harry scored on a three-yard reception to give ASU a 14-0 lead with 5:09 on the clock.
Utah's 14-point deficit was a familiar situation, but once again it didn't stop the Utes from turning the momentum in their favor. The Utes went on to score 17 unanswered points to take a 17-14 lead in the second quarter.
The Utes jumped on the scoreboard after a 75-yard drive at the end of the first quarter that featured 60 yards on the ground and four first downs. The trio of Moss, Huntley and Armand Shyne put Utah at the ASU one-yard-line with Moss punching in the one-yard rushing touchdown to cut the Arizona State lead to 14-7.
Utah continued to chip away at the Arizona State lead after Gay knocked in his 13th field goal of the season. The 40-yarder made it a four-point game to open the second quarter, ending a five-play, 21-yard drive that came on the heels of a 36-yard punt return from Britain Covey.
Samson Nacua propelled Utah into the lead with 2:15 to play in the second quarter when Huntley found him open for a five-yard touchdown. Nacua was key in putting Utah into scoring territory with a 26-yard reception to put Utah on the ASU 19, eventually finishing the drive with his third touchdown of the season to put the Utes up 17-14.
The tides turned when Arizona State regained the lead with 1:01 remaining in the second quarter when Harry scored his second touchdown of the game on a 23-yard reception. The touchdown put the Sun Devils up 21-14 to end the six-play, 77-yard drive.
The Utes made it a one-point game with the only points in the third quarter when Gay converted a 31-yard field with 1:50 on the clock. The three points cut the Arizona State lead to 21-20, ending an eight-play, 49-yard drive that took 3:51 off the clock.
Arizona State had a counter though, scoring on its next drive to make it 28-20. The 61-yard passing touchdown to Harry gave the Sun Devils an eight-point lead, putting an end to the four-play, 75-yard drive.
After Huntley went out of the game with an injury late in the third quarter, the Utah offense struggled to get going with the Sun Devils making it an 11-point game on a 21-yard field goal to start the fourth. It was a 59-yard drive for seven plays, taking 3:23 off the clock to give Arizona State a 31-20 advantage.
Arizona State scored on a 44-yard rush with 4:12 remaining in the fourth quarter, giving them a 38-20 lead before intercepting a Utah pass in the end zone. The interception sealed ASU's win with Utah unable to produce on its final drives of the game.
The Utes will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 10 when they host the Oregon Ducks at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The game time will be announced tomorrow.
