Utes Cruise Past Montana State and Weber State

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah men's tennis cruised past the competition in their first action this weekend, defeating Montana State 7-0 and Weber State 5-2.
Against Montana State, Utah took an early edge in doubles play with Randy Cory and Russell Benkaim picking up a 6-2 win at the No. 3 position. Joe Woolley and Dan Little were also victorious at the No. 1 spot, finishing with a score of 6-2 to win the doubles point for the Utes.
In singles action, Cory, Santiago Sierra, Woolley, Benkaim and David Micevski all won in straight sets to give the Utes the secured victory. Slava Shainyan was then able to defeat MSU's Rok Sitar in a competitive match 4-6, 7-6, 10-5, finishing the Bobcats off with a final score of 7-0.
Later in the day against Weber State, the Wildcats took the early edge by earning the doubles point. Randy Cory and Russell Benkaim snagged the only doubles victory for the Utes, finishing with a score of 6-1 at the No. 3 spot.
In singles, the Utes bounced back starting with Dan Little at the No. 2 position, defeating Kris Van Wyk 6-3, 7-6. David Micevski followed with a win at the No. 1 spot, beating out Stefan Cooper 6-3, 7-6. Then at the No. 3 position, Egbert Weverink chalked up a win against Nick Werner 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Santiago Sierra and Randy Corey then finished things off with a win each of their own, defeating the Wildcats with a final score of 5-2.
The University of Utah men's tennis team will be back in action Sunday with matches against Utah State at noon and Idaho State at 5 p.m.
