ERIE, Colo. – The Utah men's golf team is currently in third place following the first two rounds of play at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, which is being held at the Colorado National Golf Club.
Utah finished the first round of play in a tie for second, carding a first-round score of 5-under par (283). Utah closed out the first day of action registering a second-round score of 6-under par (282), to currently sit in third place with a combined score of 11-under par (283-282=565).
"We had a solid couple of rounds from the team today," said Utah head coach
Garrett Clegg. "We are in good position heading into tomorrow's final round. We just need to clean up our play on the par-3's and if we do that we will be in great shape."
Tournament host, Colorado, leads the team standings following two rounds of play with a combined score of 15-under par (275-286=561). Behind Colorado, Wyoming (-13) is just ahead of the Utes in second place, while Air Force (-6) and Oregon State (-5) rounded out the top-five teams, respectively.
Little Rock (E), UC Riverside (E), Northern Colorado (+1), Loyola Marymount (+4), and Utah State (+4) completed the top-10 teams in the 20-team field.
Leading Utah, junior
Kyler Dunkle heads into the final round in a tie for third place at 6-under par (138). Dunkle put together a first-round score of 2-under par (70) and followed with a second-round score of 4-under par (68).
Sophomore
Mitchell Schow also currently sits in the top-10 heading into Tuesday's action in a tie for ninth place with a combined score of 4-under par (140). Schow carded 1-under par (71) in the first round, while notching 3-under par (69) in the second round.
Freshman
Tristan Mandur (72-72=144) and sophomore
Jordan Costello (71-73=144) and are in a tie for 27
th place, finishing at even par in the first two rounds. Rounding out the five scorers for the Utes, freshman
Blake Tomlinson is in a tie for 41
st place at a two-round score of 1-over par (71-74=145).
Competing as an individual, junior
Nathan Wunderli carded a two-round score of 6-over par (76-74=150) to sit in a tie for 78
th place.
"Kyler did a great job leading up today," said Clegg. "Overall, everyone contributed and we are where we want to be heading into the final round."
Utah will close out the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational Tuesday beginning in a staggered shotgun format. The top four teams will play in five tee times off the No. 1 tee beginning at 7:55 a.m. and the remaining athletes will begin in a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m.
TOURNAMENT NOTES
· Utah's 54-hole total of 565 is the team's lowest total through the first two rounds since carding a combined score of 563 in last season's Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational.
· Dunkle carded back-to-back rounds at par or better on Monday. He has now shot par or better in all five rounds he has played in so far this season.
· Schow and Mandur also a pair of rounds at par or better on Monday. This is the first tournament that Utah has had three players shoot par or better through the first two rounds since 2007.
· Schow was just one of three players to record an eagle on the day.
· Dunkle and Costello both recorded nine birdies through the first two rounds of play. They are tied for sixth among the field of 108 players.
