LEXINGTON, Ky. – Utah junior middle blocker
Berkeley Oblad registered nine kills and a team-high .615 hitting percentage on the way to leading the No. 23-ranked Utah Utes to a 3-0 (26-24, 25-23, 25-20) win over Arkansas State in the final match of the Bluegrass Battle this weekend.
The Utes round out tournament play in Lexington, going 2-1 overall. The Red Wolves fell to 1-2 with the defeat on Saturay.
Utah hit .346 in the match, while limiting Arkansas State to just a clip of .273. The Utes registered more kills (47-46), assists (45-43) and digs (43-41). The Red Wolves did, however, register 6.0 total team blocks to Utah's 5.0 total effort.
Neither team led by more than three points in the first set. Arkansas State would go up 17-14 midway through the frame, but the Utes countered retook the lead, 19-18, with a kill from
Carly Trueman. Utah would later go up set-point, 24-22, but the Red Wolves responded with back-to-back points to notch the frame at 24-all. A kill from
Adora Anae gave Utah the lead and an attack error from the Red Wolves would give the set to the Utes.
The Utes led by as many as five points late in the second set, up 18-13, but Arkansas State climbed back into the frame and retook the lead 22-21 following a 4-0 run. Kills from
Shannon Scully and Oblad would push Utah's lead to 24-22 and Anae later put an end to the set with her sixth kill of the frame to give the Utes a commanding 2-0 lead.
The Red Wolves would go up by four points early in the third set, but Utah managed to chip away at the deficit and later tied the set at 10-all with a kill from
Tawnee Luafalemana. Arkansas State later went back on top 16-14, but Utah closed out the frame win an 11-4 run to take the set, 25-20, and win the contest in sweeping fashion.
Anae led the way for the Utes with 12 kills, followed by Oblad's nine kills and .615 hitting percentage. Luafalemana totaled six kills and
Dani Barton pitched in with five kills on the day. Luafalemana also posted a team-high four total blocks.
Bailey Choy totaled a match-high 33 assists, two kills and six digs. Kristen Ables posted a pair of service aces in the match, giving her a total of four service aces in a pair of matches this weekend.
Anae led the team with nine digs and
Brianna Doehrmann added in eight digs for the Utes.
Following the match, both Anae and Luafalemana were each named to the Bluegrass Battle All-Tournament Team.
Utah is back in action again next weekend when the team travels to Honolulu, Hawaii, to compete in the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic. The Utes will get the tournament underway next Thursday, Aug. 31, taking on South Dakota.
