SALT LAKE CITY - Utah diving will compete at the Zone E Championships with the goal of qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Competition will begin tomorrow, March 6 and run through Wednesday, March 8 at the Douglas J. Wall Aquatic Center in Flagstaff, Ariz.
"We're looking forward to putting our best foot forward in this meet and hopefully getting some divers qualified for the NCAA national championships in a couple weeks," said Utah head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "It is a very long and tough meet to compete at but we have an experienced squad going that should be able to perform well."
Competing on the men's side are senior
Josiah Purss and sophomores
Connor Cain and
Daniel Theriault. The women will be sending two divers, senior
Amanda Casillas and junior
Lauren Hall. Both Casillas and Hall will be competing in all three events.
Purss will be competing in all three-events as well while Cain will compete in the one-meter and three-meter and Theriault will compete in the three-meter and platform events.
Last year, Purss qualified for the NCAA Championships on the three-meter event as well as the one-meter. He took second on both events. In the three-meter event, he tallied a total score of 804.75 while on the one-meter, he came away with a score of 732.90.
Casillas qualified for the NCAA's on the platform and three-meter. On the platform event, she took seventh with a total score of 519.20. On the three-meter, she took 12th tallying a score of 575.90. Hall was 17th (542.95) in the event.
Casillas also took 20th on the one-meter (258.55) with Hall taking 36th (244.60). There were 58 divers competing in the event.
At the 2016 NCAA Championships, Purss took 11th with on the one-meter event with a score of 357.95. He then would take 22nd on the three-meter with a score of 355.95.
Casillas finished 44th on the three-meter with a score of 261.50. She finished seventh among Pac-12 divers in the event. On the platform event, she took 27th tallying a score of 224.15. She had the seventh-best score among the other Pac-12 divers.
Cain has six top-five finishes in the one-meter, two of those being first-place finishes. He also has five top-five finishes for the three-meter event.
Theriault finished among the top three this season on both the one and three-meter events six times. He also just missed the top spot at the Air Force Diving Invite on the platform event.
Against Harvard, Hall took first on the three-meter tallying a total score of 165.95. She also took second on the one-meter (243.75). She has eight top-five finishes this season.
