COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Junior
Grayson Murphy closed out the indoor season for the Utah track and field team Friday night at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Held at the Gilliam Indoor Facility in College Station, Texas, the national championships displayed the top-16 athletes in each event around the country.
Â
Murphy competed in the 5000-meter run and finished in 15
th place. The junior from Salt Lake finished the race with a time of 16:24.00. Murphy earned second team All-American honors to cap off her indoor season.
Â
"Ideally it wasn't what we were looking for. About four laps in Grayson got cut off and tripped by another competitor and fell in the far turn. She went down and hit the rail pretty hard, but she got up and tried to stay in the race and battled as hard as she could. She climbed up to about 11
th or 12
th but eventually faded. She did everything she could to hang on as long as she could," head coach
Kyle Kepler explained.
Â
"We are just so proud of Grayson and all she has showed this season. Just to be at this meet means that you are one of the best in the country and nobody can take that away from her. She deserves this and she has worked so hard to be here. Her teammates are incredibly proud of her and she is very thankful to be on our team," Kepler said.
Â
Utah will look forward to opening its outdoor season next weekend at the Baldy Castillo Invitational. The two-day event will be held March 17-18, in Tempe, Ariz.
