SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah track and field team will head to two different meets this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10-11. The Utah distance runners will travel to Seattle, Washington to compete in the Husky Classic at the Dempsey Indoor Track. Headed to Albuquerque, New Mexico are the Ute sprinters, jumpers, and hurdlers to compete in the Don Kirby Invitational.
Â
"The Husky Invitational is one of the biggest meets in the country, particularly on the distance side of things. The competition will be half a step below what the national meet will be so this is huge," head coach
Kyle Kepler said.
Â
Highlighting the distance runners competing this weekend includes juniors
Grayson Murphy,
Hannah McInturff, and
Jessica Sams, along with freshman
Amanda Gehrich. Murphy will compete in her first 5K of the season. Murphy is coming off a top-20 performance in the 3K two weeks ago at the UW Invitational, where her time ranked fourth all-time in Utah indoor history.
Â
McInturff and Sams will compete in the 3000-meter run at the Husky Classic. McInturff competed in the 3K at the UW Invitational where she recorded the sixth best time in school history. Sams ran her first race after almost a year of competition due to redshirting, where she placed 38th and nearly had a personal record.
Â
Gehrich led the way for the Utes in the mile at the UW Invitational. Gehrich placed 18
th overall and clocked the fourth fastest time in school history.
Â
Other athletes heading to the Husky Invitational will include sophomore
Caitlin Faust, junior
Grace Englund, freshmen
Nicole Griffiths and
Poppy Tank, and senior
Becky Sarmiento.
Â
Faust and Englund will compete in the 800-meter run and Griffiths will join Gehrich in the mile run. Sarmiento and Tank, along with Sams and McInturff will compete in the 3000-meter run. Utah will enter a 4x400 relay team consisting of Englund, Gehrich, Griffiths and Tank. The Utes will also compete in the distance medley comprised of a team including Tank, Faust, Griffiths and Sarmiento.
Â
"The sprints, jumps, and hurdles crew competed very well and were definitely much improved over the last weekend and we will certainly be looking forward to seeing all of those guys get back on the track again this weekend in Albuquerque," Kepler said.
Â
Highlighting the young jumps group at the Don Kirby Invitational is freshman
Ann Wingeleth. In just three indoor meets, Wingeleth has won the long jump twice, with her best mark ranking second all-time, and competed in the triple jump for the first time where she placed third and the mark ranked fourth on the all-time list.
Â
Leading the sprints group in Albuquerque will be freshman
Holly Stallman. Stallman had posted three straight personal records, with her best time in the 60-meter dash placing fifth all-time in Utah indoor history, before advancing to the finals last week in the 60-meter dash at the Jackson's Invitational.
Other Ute athletes will compete alongside Wingeleth and Stallman at the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M, as well. Check back to utahutes.com for the recap of both meets.
