SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Men's Tennis will open its third weekend of home matches this Friday at the Eccles Tennis Center. The Utes will match up against the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers (0-5) at 5 p.m., followed by two matches on Sunday against the University of New Mexico Lobos (1-5) at 1:30 p.m. and the University of Montana Grizzlies (3-1) at 6 p.m.
Utah Notes
The University of Utah men's tennis team is coming off a victorious weekend against Boise State. The Utes fell behind early, losing the doubles point to the Broncos.
Santiago Sierra and
Slava Shainyan were the only doubles team to win for the Utes, edging out Morgan Stone and Greg Wischer with a score of 6-4.
In singles action,
Slava Shainyan was dominant at the No. 5 position, defeating Morgan Stone 6-1, 6-0. Then at the No. 3 spot,
Joe Woolley quickly defeated Pedro Platzeck with a final score of 6-1, 6-3.
David Micevski also cruised to a victory at the No. 1 position, defeating Kyle Butters with a score of 6-1, 6-2.
Dan Little then finished things off for the day for the Utes, defeating Brian Tran with a final score of 7-6(4), 6-1.
Opponent Notes
The Nebraska men's tennis team ended its road series on Saturday, with a 7-0 loss to Fresno State. Toby Boyer and Dylan Bednarczyk played in the No. 1 spot and fell 6-4. Tomislav Antoljak and David Samardzija lost, 6-3. In the No. 3 spot, Micah Klousia and Chris Dean faught hard against the Bulldogs, but then unfortunately fell, 7-6 (4). In singles, Boyer played strong in the No. 1 position against Xander Veys but lost 6-3, 7-6 (2). Tomislav Antoljak played against Zdenek Derkas and fell 6-0, 7-5. Micah Klousia and Youssef Hassan played a tough match that favored the Bulldogs, 6-2, 6-2. David Samardzija played hard against Mantas Bugailiskis but lost 6-1, 7-6 (4).
The University of New Mexico men's tennis team is also coming off a loss from the previous weekend, losing a tight match to Cal Poly, 4-3. To begin doubles play, the team of Rodolfo Jauregui and Sean Baklini defeated Karl Enander and Antoine Noel of Cal Poly on at the No. spot, 6-4. Dominic West and Bart Van Leijsen defeated Tim Tan and Garrett Auproux of Cal Poly on court two 7-6 (6), giving the Lobos the doubles point. In singles play, Hernandez-Tong secured the first win for the team and defeated Auproux 6-2, 7-6 at the No. 3 position. Following Hernandez-Tong, Jorge Esctia defeated Noel 6-3, 6-4 on at the No. 5 spot, gaining the second singles win for the team and the 3-2. Joshua Ortlip for the last point that would secure the team's victory but fell to Ortlip by a final score of 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
The University of Montana Grizzlies are coming off a victory this past weekend, defeating North Dakota 6-1. Montana's three doubles teams swept North Dakota to win the doubles point. Ignacio Tejerina picked up the first win at the No. 6 position, 6-2, 6-2, while Victor Casadevall was victorious at the No. 3 spot 6-2, 7-6. Mimnagh-Fleming then cruised past North Dakota's Alex Mailes 6-4, 6-1 for the Grizzlies' third-straight win.
