SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah head men's golf coach
Garrett Clegg has announced the addition of two signees set to join the Utes in the fall of 2018. Jonathan Wijono (Indonesia) and Axel Einarsson (Sweden) have both signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Utes.
"We are signing two phenomenal players to play golf for us beginning next fall," said Clegg. "Both Jonathan and Axel have impressive amateur records. They have been competing at a high level in some of the top junior and amateur tournaments around the world."
Wijono most recently finished among the top-25 golfers at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in New Zealand, among an elite field of competition. Earlier this year he won the Indonesia Elite Amateur Championship where he carded a score of 5-under par and won the event by a total of 13 strokes as the runner-up scored 8-over par. Wijono carded five of six rounds under 70, while winning both the Kejuarann National Junior Golf and Faldo Series Asia Indonesia championships.
"Jonathan is a phenomenal talent from Indonesia," said Clegg. "He has been spending his summers competing in the U.S. and has had a lot of success in the largest junior events here. His golf game is extremely steady and consistent. Coach [Chance] Cain did an exceptional job finding and recruiting him to the U."
Einarsson is most recently coming off a top-15 finish at the Skandia Junior Open this past September. He finished in a tie for 13
th place at the same event back in 2016. Einarsson qualified in 16 of 17 total events he has played in this past season, while also finishing among the top-10 in four different tournaments.
"Axel comes to us after a great deal of success in Sweden," said Clegg. "He has represented his national team in various competitions and brings with him a tireless work ethic.
"We expect both of our freshmen to come in and make positive impacts on our team. They are fantastic players and will be huge help to the team as we continue to build a nationally competitive golf program. Coach Cain has been a tremendous help in getting these young men to come to the University of Utah and in developing a winning culture for our golf program."
