FRESNO, Calif. – The Utah men's golf team currently sits in a tie for first place following two rounds of play on Monday at the Nick Watney Invitational in Fresno, Calif. Utah recorded a two-round score of 8-over par (576) at the Sunnyside Country Club.
The Utes posted a first round 2-over par (286) and followed by 6-over par (290) in the second round.
"We put ourselves in a very good position for tomorrow's final round," said Utah head coach
Garrett Clegg. "We didn't finish the day where we would have liked to, finishing with some bogeys on holes we shouldn't have, so that was a little disappointing for us. However, the course is playing extremely challenging and we still believe we are in good shape tomorrow currently sitting in a tie for first. We just need to clean up some areas and we will be ready for tomorrow's final round."
Utah heads into Tuesday's action tied with three other teams for first place. Along with Utah, Loyola Marymount, St. Mary's, and BYU also registered a two-round score of 8-over par (576). San Francisco completed the top-five teams on Monday in fifth place with a combined score of 10-over par (578). There are a total of 16 teams in the field.
Freshman
Blake Tomlinson led the Ute golfers after carding a 1-under par (70) in the first and second rounds. Tomlinson sits in a tie for second place with a combined score of 2-under par (140). Tomlinson also recorded a hole in one in the first round, marking the first of the season for Utah.
Freshman
Tristan Mandur heads into the final round in a tie for 11
th place with a combined two-round score of 2-over par (144). Mandur carded even par (71) in the first round and 2-over par (73) in the second round.
"For Blake and Tristan to lead our team today as two freshmen is extremely impressive," Clegg said. "This course requires a lot of discipline and patience and for these two guys to play that way is fantastic to see."
Junior
Kyler Dunkle is currently in a tie for 15
th place with a combined score of 3-over par (145). Dunkle posted rounds of 2-over par (73) and 1-over par (72). Sophomore
Jordan Costello is in a tie for 24
th place at 5-over par (147). Costello recorded a first-round 1-over par (72) and a second-round 4-over par (75).
Rounding out the Utah golfers on Monday,
Mitchell Schow recorded a combined score of 14-over par (156) to sit in a tie for 74
th place heading into Tuesday. Schow carded 7-over par (78) in the first and second rounds.
All players will be re-grouped before the final round on Tuesday, based on scores, and tee off every 10 minutes from holes No. 1 and No. 10. Players will begin teeing off at 8 a.m. PT/ 9 a.m. MT on Tuesday.
