PULLMAN, Wash. – The University of Utah men's golf team opened its fall season on Monday at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate with a 9-over 577 (287-290) to finish the day in sole possession of second-place at Palouse Ridge Golf Course.
The Utes will head into Tuesday's final round 15 strokes behind Washington State at the par-71, 7,308-yard course. The Cougars lead at 6-under 562 (283-279), while Sacramento State (+14, 582), British Columbia (+15, 583) and Pacific (+16, 584) rounded out the top-five.
Senior
Gentry Hicks led the way for the Utes, shooting even-par 142 through the first two rounds. Hicks, who is in a three-way tie for sixth-place, carded a 2-under par 69 through his first 18 holes of play and followed with a 2-over par 73 in second-round action.
Freshman
Mitchell Schow heads into Tuesday's final round in a tie for eighth-place after carding a two-round score of 1-over par 143. Playing in his first collegiate tournament, the true freshman shot just 1-over par in the first round and then followed with a score of even-par 71 in the second round.
Freshman
Christian James shot even-par 71 in the first round, along with a 4-over par 75 in the second round and currently sits in a tie for 21st-place with a two-round score of 4-over par 146. Freshman
Peyton Hastings, who is playing as an individual for the Utes, is in a tie for 28th-place with scores of 2-over par 73 and 3-over par 74 for a total of 5-over par 147 through the first two rounds of play.
Junior
Kyler Dunkle carded a 4-over par 75 in he first round and later lowered his score with a 2-over par in second-round action to finish at 6-over par 148 on the day. Dunkle heads into the final round tied for 36th-place. Freshman
Jordan Costello rounded out Utah's scoring with a two-round score of 9-over par 151 and sits in a tie for 55th-place following rounds of 7-over par and 2-over par, respectively.
In a field of 14 teams, Utah ranked fourth in par-3 scoring (3.26, +13), second in par-4 scoring (4.11, +10) and tied for eighth in par-5 scoring (4.93, -3). The Utes ranked second in the field with 112 pars and 26 birdies through the first 35 holes.
James led the Utes with 25 pars on the day, while Gentry led the team with seven birdies. Hastings led the entire field with two eagles, which he recorded on the ninth and 18th holes in the second round.
The Utes conclude play at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate with the third round on Tuesday morning. Action is set to get underway with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. (PST).
