SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah men's golf program will be well represented at the 2016 U.S. Amateur Championship as former Ute
Brandon Kida, along with incoming Utes Mitchell Schow, Kyler Dunkle and Jordan Costello have each qualified for the championship.
Kida, a four-year letterwinner for the Utes from 2011-16, finished in second place in the Utah sectional qualifier after posting a two-round score of 7-under par (137) on Wednesday at Valley View Golf Course in Layton.
The former two-time Pac-12 All-Academic Team selection collected five birdies in the first round, but finished the first 18 holes at even par (72). Kida, who began the second round at hole No. 10, opened with three-straight pars before collecting a birdie on hole No. 13. He would later birdie No. 17 to push his score to 2-under par. Kida birdied two of his next three holes and closed out the round recording birdies on holes No. 6, 8 and 9 to finish with a 7-under par 65.
Schow, an incoming freshman from Park City, won the Utah sectional qualifier at Valley View Golf Course, defeating Kida by one stroke as he finished the two-round event at 8-under par after firing rounds of 71 (-1) and 65 (-7) on Wednesday.
After carding just three birdies in the morning round, Schow countered with eight birdies in the final round, which included six birdies and three pars in his final nine holes. Schow finished his round 1-under on par 3's, 3-under on par 4's and 4-under on par 5's. He totaled 11 birdies to just three bogeys on the day.
Dunkle, who just recently transferred to Utah from Colorado State, qualified for his second straight U.S. Amateur Championship after carding rounds of 66 (-4) and 68 (-2) at Fort Collins Country Club earlier this week. Dunkle's two-round score of 134 (-6) was good enough to not only win the sectional qualifier, but it was four strokes better than his next competitor that came in second place.
Dunkle recorded 13 birdies over the two-round event, which included birdies on his first three holes during Monday's morning round. Later that afternoon he also managed to post birdies on two of his first three holes.
Costello, an incoming freshman who hails from Pinedale, Wyo., won his sectional qualifier, posting a two-round score of 145 (+1) at Shooting Star Golf Course in Jackson Hole on Monday. Costello carded a 73 (1+) in the first round, but closed out the tournament shooting even par 72 on the way to a two-stoke win.
Costello collected three birdies in his opening round on Monday. He later posted seven bogeys in the afternoon round, but countered with five birdies and one eagle to finish scoring at even par. The three-time Wyoming State Champion finished both rounds shooting 3-under par on Par 5's.
The 2016 U.S. Amateur Championship is set for Aug. 15-21 at Oakland Hills in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. It is the same course that has hosted six U.S. Opens, three PGA Championships and a Ryder Cup.
