INDIANAPOLIS - A school record four Utah athletics teams have been publicly recognized by the NCAA for posting a multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent of all athletic teams in the country, the NCAA announced on Wednesday. Utah's football, men's basketball, men's golf and women's cross-country teams have been honored this year.
Prior to this year's honor, Utah teams had been recognized in the top 10 percent eight times. This year marks the first time that Utah's football, men's golf and women's cross-country teams have been recognized. It marks the third time the Runnin' Ute basketball team has been honored, with the previous two honors coming back in 2008-09 and 2009-10.
Utah is just one of two schools from the Pac-12 Conference that had both men's basketball and football teams recognized during 2014-15. Stanford, who led the conference with 12 sports receiving recognition, also had its men's basketball and football teams honored. Utah tied for the second-most among conference teams as Arizona State also had four teams recognized.
Each year, the NCAA honors selected NCAA Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.
Football's Marcus Williams (Corona, Calif.) and Hunter Dimick (Syracuse, Utah) were both named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team, while men's basketball's Brandon Taylor (Los Angeles, Calif.) was recently named the Pac-12 Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Men's Golf Academic All-District teams will be announced on May 12, while Cross-Country Academic teams will be announced on May 26.
