SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's tennis team fought hard and came away with a 4-3 victory against No. 39 Fresno State on Thursday at the Eccles Tennis Center.
"This was an excellent win as both freshmen were winners at the doubles position," Utah Head Coach Mat Iandolo said. "Freshmen Brianna Turley and sophomore Margo Pletcher beat the #18 (doubles) team in the country to secure the doubles point."
Freshman Taylor Calton and junior Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa defeated Sofya Malysheva and Olivia Noble, 6-2, to start doubles play.
To clinch the doubles point Pletcher and Turley defeated #18 Mayar Sherif Ahmed and Rana Sherif Ahmed, 6-3.
As singles play started, Turley helped the Utes jump out to a 2-0 lead with a victory over Rana Sherif Ahmed, 7-5, 6-1.
The Bulldogs cut into Utah's lead with a Malysheva 6-2, 6-3 win over sophomore Alexia Petrovic.
Fresno State then briefly took a lead with consecutive victories at the No. 2 and 1 position.
Sophomore Jena Cheng kept the match alive with a three-set win over Galina Bykova, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.
The match came down to Calton against Anneka Watts. Calton came away with the first set 6-3, but dropped the second set 7-5. The third set came down to a tiebreak that Calton won in decisive fashion 7-6 (7-1).
The Utes resume Pac-12 Conference play tomorrow against No. 27 USC at 1:30 p.m. MT in the Eccles Tennis Center.
