EUGENE, Ore. -- Redshirt sophomore forward Emily Potter scored a team-high 23 points, her seventh game with at least 20 points this season, but the University of Utah women's basketball team came up short in a 69-58 contest at Oregon on Friday in Matthew Knight Arena.
Utah (14-10, 6-7 Pac-12) held a 20-12 edge in second-chance points over Oregon and the Utes did not allow a single transition point to the Ducks.
Potter turned in her seven game of the season with 20 points or more after a 23-point effort and 10-of-13 shooting effort from the floor (76.9%). She also grabbed seven rebounds, which was second on the team. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native scored in double-figures for the 22nd time in 24 games this season and the 39th time of her career.
Potter also had three blocks against the Ducks and has 61 this season, which is already tied for the second-most in a single season in school history. She is now two blocks away from setting the school new single-season record (62 by Lauren Beckman in 2001-02). Potter is already eighth in school history with 104 career blocks and two away from moving past Halie Sawyer (105 from 2006-10) for seventh place.
Junior wing Paige Crozon secured her ninth double-double of 2015-16 with a team-high 12 boards and 10 points. The Humboldt, Saskatchewan native has been in double-figures for rebounds nine times this season and has been in double-figures 16 times this season and 24 times over her career.
Senior point guard Danielle Rodriguez registered her fourth straight game with 10 or more points with 10 points after a 5-of-10 shooting night. She tied for game-high honors with five assists and is ranked fifth in school history with 426 career assists and is 14 away from tying Karen Alcorn (440 from 1998-92). She had three steals in the contest, which was one shy of tying her career best, and tied her season high with two blocks.
Redshirt sophomore wing Malia Nawahine scored nine points with two assists and two steals, just missing her fifth consecutive game with at least 10 points.
The Utes scored field goals on their first four possessions. Potter scored on a 1-on-1 against Alleyne for the first basket of the contest and a transition lay-in by Potter gave the Utes a 4-2 lead and a Crozon lay-up followed by a Rodriguez jumper and lay-in put Utah ahead 10-4. The Ducks scored seven straight to take the lead for the first time at 11-10, but the Utes fought back with a 7-4 stretch to close the first quarter and retake the advantage at 18-15. Both teams shot 50.0% from the floor with Utah going 8-of-16 and Oregon going 7-of-14. Potter, Crozon and Rodriguez scored four points apiece, while Crozon will add four rebounds.
The Ducks grabbed a 22-20 lead midway through the quarter and would lead by as many as 11 (35-24), which doubled as the halftime score. Potter swatted three Oregon shots and contributed four points in the second half against the Ducks.
The Utes scored eight of the first 10 points of the second half as Potter had a putback for the first basket and Utah closed within five (37-32). A Katie Kuklok corner 3-pointer with less than a second remaining in the frame brought the Utes back within six (49-43) heading into the final period. Potter made four of her four field goal attempts and contributed nine points and three boards to lead the Utes.
A pair of Oregon free throws pushed the disadvantage to 10 (53-43) before a 14-8 Utah surge brought the visitors back to within four (61-57) midway through the fourth. Unfortunately, the Utes could get no closer as Oregon came away with the 69-58 victory. Potter scored six points after making both of her field goal attempts after a 2-for-3 performance at the free throw line.
Oregon (18-6, 7-6 Pac-12) was led by a game-high 27 points to go with 13 rebounds by Jillian Alleyne.
The Utes continue their road swing on Sunday at No. 8/8 Oregon State on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT. The matchup will be streamed live at pac-12.com with Rick Bouillon on the radio call at 105.1 FM in Salt Lake City.
