SEATTLE, Wash.- The University of Utah track and field distance runners kicked off the first day of action at the UW Invitational with multiple athletes competing for the first time this season. Competing in their only event of the evening, the Utes earned third overall in the distance medley.
The relay comprised of sophomore Sarah Feeny, true freshman Caitie Faust, redshirt freshman Sadie Wassum and sophomore Hannah McInturff performed well for the Utes, capturing third overall. Feeny kicked the Utes off with a strong showing in the 1,200-meter leg, recording a time of 3:27 to keep the Utes right in the hunt with the top runners. Faust posted a time of 58.7 seconds in the 400, handing off to Wassum to complete the 800. McInturff closed out the race for the Utes, recording a time of 4:53 in the mile. Overall, the Utes finished the race in 11:37.99.
"I thought we ran very well overall," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "We got a good opening leg from Feeny. Caitie [Faust] is really coming along and getting a little bit better. She certainly ran a little faster than her 400 last week in Boise by about three seconds. It is great to see her improve and run hard. Sadie Wassum probably ran a little slower than she would have liked, but she was just being a little cautious. McInturff ran a pretty fast opening lap and then settled into a relaxed pace when there was no one around her. We just wanted her to try and run as smooth as she could and that is what she did."
The Utes will continue competition in Seattle tomorrow, beginning at noon with the mile run.
"It was a good opening day and we are excited for tomorrow," Kepler said. "There is a lot of stuff tomorrow starting at noon. Wassum opens things up with the mile, the first of her collegiate career. Then have a bunch of athletes running the 800 and 3,000 and then wrap things up with the 4x400."
