MIDWAY - Five University of Utah golfers competed in the 117th Utah State Amateur Championships this past week, which was held at Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway.
The event, which ran July 6-11, began with a pair of stroke play qualifying rounds and was followed by six rounds of match play to close out the championship.
All five of Utah's competitors in the event - Steven Croft, Brandon Kida, Justin Mortensen, Jose Pelayo and Jonathon Thomas - qualified for match play following the conclusion of stroke play last Monday and Tuesday.
"It's great to see the guys playing well this summer," said Utah head coach Randall McCracken. "It is a talented group and I am really looking forward to the start of the 2015-16 season."
Mortensen finished in a tie for first-place in stroke play, carding rounds of four-under par (68) and five-under par (67) to finish nine-under par (135) for the event. Croft followed in a tie for fourth-place with a two-day score of eight-under par (68-68=136) and Kida tallied a top-15 finish, tying for 14th-place with a score of five-under par (68-71=139).
Pelayo finished in a tie for 25th-place with a two-day score of three-under par (69-72=141) and Thomas rounded out Utah's scores in a tie for 33rd-place after carding a score of two-under par (70-72=142).
Kida would go on to advance to the semifinal round of match play, picking up wins in the round of 64 (2 and 1), round of 32 (4 and 3), round of 16 (4 and 3) and quarterfinals (2 and 1), before falling in the semifinal round (one down) on Friday.
Mortensen (7 and 6), Croft (2 and1) and Pelayo (5 and 4) posted wins in the round of 64, but all three competitors were later eliminated in the round of 32. Thomas fell in the round of 64 (1 and 2).
