BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of Utah women's tennis team lost to No. 3 California on Saturday as the Golden Bears took a 7-0 victory over the Utes at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
"Cal, like Stanford, is a team that can win an NCAA Championship and we are just not ready to beat teams like that on their home courts yet," said Utah head coach Mat Iandolo. "We will use the experience of this weekend to help us on our extended home stand."
Utah (3-8, 0-2 Pac-12) fell behind California (9-2, 2-0 Pac-12) as the Golden Bears took an edge from the onset as No. 4 duo Maegan Manasse and Denise Star took the first doubles match from No. 31 Tereza Bekerova and Margo Pletcher (8-3), while No. 12 Klara Fabikova and Zsofi Susanyi defeated Elena Najera-Salas and Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa (8-4) at No. 2 to secure the doubles point for the home team.
Heading into singles play down 1-0, Utah was pitted against five nationally-ranked opponents, including four top-50 competitors. Cal continued to control the match as No. 2 Manasse took the top singles match from No. 53 Bekerova (6-0, 6-2) and No. 24 Susanyi topped Pletcher (6-0, 6-1) in the Utah freshman's first match playing out for the fourth position.
No. 61 Starr secured the match for the Golden Bears with a victory over da Rosa at No. 3, 6-1, 6-3. Although the match was decided, the teams continued to battle until Cal eventually secured the 7-0 victory.
The Utes return home for eight straight home matches, beginning Friday against Arizona State. First serve is set for 1:30 p.m. MT at the Eccles Tennis Center.
