SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team fell to No. 24 Arizona State Friday as the Sun Devils took down the Utes 7-0 at Coach Mike's TennisCenter.
"This was a tough loss to a very good team," said Utah head coach Mat Iandolo. "There were many close singles matches that we just weren't able to get done and it cost us. There is a reason why they are a top-25 ranked team in the country, because they play the big points better than we do."
Utah (3-9, 0-3) fell behind early as ASU (9-2, 1-0) captured the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. The 75th-ranked Sun Devil duo of Joanna Smith and Kassidy Jump downed Sarah Richter and Jena Cheng 8-2 at the second position, while Ebony Paoho and Alexandra Osborne defeated Elena Najera-Salas and Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa 8-4 at No. 3.
Utah fought back in singles play, but was unable to gain ground as ASU remained in control of the match. The Utes put in solid efforts with Richter, Alexia Petrovic and Cheng all battling to 7-6 in singles sets, despite ultimately dropping their individual matches. Da Rosa managed to stretch the No. 3 match against Smith to three sets, but eventually was defeated 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. With the victory, ASU secures its' sixth-straight win and its' fourth 7-0 shutout over that span.
Utah returns to the court Sunday at 11 a.m. to take on No. 50 Arizona at Coach Mike's Tennis Center.
