SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team (5-10, 1-4 Pac-12) earned its' first Pac-12 Conference victory of the season with a 5-2 upset of No. 60 Oregon (7-5, 1-1 Pac-12) Friday at Coach Mike's Tennis Academy.
"You can never underestimate the significance of a Pac-12 win," said Utah head coach Mat Iandolo. "This was a hard-fought battle against a nationally-ranked team. I felt like we did a good job at getting a great start in doubles and then maintaining it throughout singles. We're looking forward to a good battle on Sunday against Washington."
Utah struck first in doubles play as Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa and Elena Najera-Salas toppled Lina Akesson and Sofia Hager 8-1 in the third match. The Ducks evened the score as No. 31 Tereza Bekerova and Margo Pletcher took a loss to Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita. Sarah Richter and Jena Cheng then clinched the point for the Utes with an 8-3 win over Marlou Kluiving and Nicole Long.
Utah continued its winning ways as Alexia Petrovic handily defeated Hager 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6. No. 53 Bekerova did the same at the first position with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Rose to put the Utes up 3-0. With a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 5 over Akesson, da Rosa clinched the team win for Utah.
Though the match was decided, play continued as Cheng earned a victory over Long (6-3, 3-6, 6-0) and Pletcher took a loss to Kluiving (5-7, 6-3, 10-2). The No. 2 match between Richter and Tobita was retired due to injury.
Utah returns to the court Sunday with a doubleheader, starting against Washington at 11 a.m. at Coach Mike's Tennis Academy and Weber State at 5 p.m. at the Eccles Tennis Center.
