SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team (7-10, 2-4 Pac-12) collected its fourth-straight win as the Utes netted back-to-back victories Sunday against No. 46 Washington (10-5, 2-1 Pac-12) and Weber State (5-4).
The Utes snapped the Huskies seven-match win streak to collect a 4-3 victory at Coach Mike's Tennis Academy, then returned to the Eccles Tennis Center to blank the Wildcats 7-0.
"Washington has been an intense back-and-fourth series since we've been in the conference," said Utah head coach Mat Iandolo. "It's always good to get a win over them. It also sets us up for the rest of the season and making a run for a strong Pac-12 [Conference] finish."
Utah took an early 1-0 lead over Washington after taking the doubles point. Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa and Elena Najera-Salas bested Angela Chen and Natalie Allen (8-5) before No. 31 Tereza Bekerova and Margo Pletcher took the first match from Riko Shimizu and Miki Kobayashi (8-3) to secure the point.
The Utes then took a 3-0 lead in the match as Alexia Petrovic topped Chen at No. 6 (6-1, 6-4) and Bekerova downed Grace Ysidora at No. 1 (6-3, 6-0).
The Huskies fought back, claiming three-straight points to knot the match at 3-3. The decision came down to the second match between Richter and Kobayashi with Richter prevailing 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 to clinch the Utah victory.
In match two, Utah handily took the doubles point from Weber State with wins from Bekerova and Pletcher at No. 1 and Richter and da Rosa at No. 2. The Utes continued on to take all six singles matches to execute their first sweep of the season.
"Weber [State] is a much improved team and even though we were a little tired from the first match, I felt like we came out and focused really well and played some solid tennis," said Iandolo. "We have to feel good about a four-match win streak. We have to keep it going through next week."
