BARBOURSVILLE, W. Va. - The 73rd-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (3-6) secured its second victory in two days after executing a 4-3 upset of No. 55 Marshall (6-4) at the Huntington Tennis Club.
"This was a great team win in a challenging environment," said Utah head coach Mat Iandolo. "The freshmen did a great job and Margo [Pletcher] played a great third set with the entire match on the line."
Marshall and Utah traded victories in the first two doubles matches. The Herd took the No. 1 match before Sarah Richter and Jena Cheng countered with a win over Marija Bogicevic and Kai Broomfield at the No. 2 spot (8-5). The battle continued in match three as Rachael Morales and Maddie Silver eventually captured the doubles point for the Herd with a defeat of Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa and Elena Najera-Salas (8-7).
Entering singles play, the Utes quickly moved into the lead as Cheng routed Anna Pomyatinskaya 6-2, 6-3 at the third position and No. 53 Tereza Bekerova followed with a victory over Derya Turhan at the top spot (7-5, 6-2)
The Herd tied the match 2-2 as Richter gave up the No. 2 match to Silver (6-1, 6-4), but the Utes fought back as Alexia Petrovic took the fifth match from Bogicevic (7-5, 6-2).
Marshall continued to battle as Broomfield topped da Rosa at No. 4, 6-7, 2-6. With the match now knotted at 3-3, the decision came down to the No. 6 dual. Extending the match to three sets, Pletcher outlasted Morales to clinch the Utah victory (6-4, 4-6, 6-1).
The Utes kick off Pac-12 Conference play this weekend in California. Utah is slated to face Stanford on Friday at 2:30 p.m. MT and Cal on Saturday at 11 a.m. MT.
