The 73rd-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (2-6) captured its second win of the season, topping Penn State (2-7) 4-2 at the Huntington Tennis Center on Sunday.
"We shook up the doubles and got much better aggression and that set the tone for this match," said Utah head coach Mat Iandolo. "Penn State is a very good squad."
The Utes started off strong, executing a sweep of doubles competition. The 31st-ranked duo Tereza Bekerova and Margo Pletchter improved to a team-best 3-2 doubles record with a win over Victoria Kisialeva and Dasha Sapogova at the No. 1 spot (8-5). Utah mixed up the bottom of the line up, pairing Sarah Richter and Jena Cheng at No. 2 and Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa and Elena Najera-Salas at No. 3 for the first time this season. Both pairs came away with victories to claim the double point for Utah.
Utah was resilient through singles play as the team managed three additional wins to secure the victory. No. 53 Bekerova collected her fifth dual-match win of the season, downing Katia Kilk, 6-3, 7-5. Freshmen Jena Cheng and Alexia Petrovic claimed responsibility for the Utes other two points as Cheng topped Kimberley-Ann Surin at No. 3 (7-6, 3-6, 6-3) and Petrovic took the No. 5 match from Devan McClusky (6-1, 6-2).
The Utes return to the Huntington Tennis Center tomorrow at 5 p.m. MT to face the home team, the Marshall Herd. Live stats are available at http://www.herdzone.com/livestats/w-tennis/xlive.htm
