SALT LAKE CITY--
Three incoming Utah gymnastics freshmen finished their club careers with a bang at the Junior Olympic Championships in Jackson, Miss., last weekend, where they secured two gold medals and three top-five all-around finishes.
Kari Lee (whose first name is pronounced CAR-ee) won the vault and placed third in the all-around, Maddy Stover won the beam and was fourth in the all-around and Tiffany Lewis took fifth in the all-around.
Utah's other recruit for next season, Samantha Partyka, missed the championships while recovering from an injury. Partyka was the J.O. vault and floor champion last year and also won the vault at the 2012 J.O. Championships, where she was the all-around runner-up.
Utah coaches Greg Marsden and Tom Farden attended the Championships and were impressed with their incoming recruits. "Kari, Maddy and Tiffany looked great and we're really excited about them joining our team. While Samantha couldn't compete due to injury, we expect her to be a big contributor for us this coming season as well," said Marsden.
All four recruits will be on campus next month to start summer school on June 19. They will participate in voluntary summer training and conditioning as a part of the summer bridge program for freshmen.
Lee, from Peoria, Ariz., was the 2013 J.O. all-around champion. Stover, from Fullerton, Calif., has won two J.O. beam championships (2011, 2014). Lewis hails from Las Vegas, while Partyka is an elite level gymnast from Katy, Texas.
