SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah golf team wraps up its season at the 2014 Men's Pac-12 Golf Championships in Tucson, Ariz., Friday, April 25-Sunday, April 27. The four-round tournament will be held at the par-72, 7,349-yard Gallery Golf Club. Live scoring will be available via golfstat.com.
Format
The first and second rounds of the tournament will be played Friday, followed by the third round on Saturday. Teams will then close out the tournament Sunday with the fourth and final round, followed by an awards ceremony immediately following completion of play. Each round consists of 18 holes and will begin with tee times at 7:30 a.m. MST.
The five players with the low scores on a team for any 18-hole round shall constitute the scoring members of the team for that round, and the team with the lowest total combined score for all rounds shall be the team champion.
The Field
Utah will contend with stiff competition as four Pac-12 teams rank in the top 20 nationally, led by defending conference champions and second-ranked California. The Golden Bears are also joined in the rankings by No. 6 Stanford, No. 14 UCLA, and No. 15 Washington. The Utes will also compete against Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Oregon, Oregon State, USC, and Washington State.
Last Time at the Pac-12 Championships
The Utes posted a final team score of 1,513 (358-371-393-391) to finish 12th at the 2013 Pac-12 Championship Tournament.
Utah was in fifth place after the first and second rounds, but slid down the leader board during the third round and was unable to recover. California captured the team championship and saw its players earn both the medalist and second-place positions individually.
Brandon Kida finished tied for 45th with a four-round total of 300 (72-74-76-78). Daniel Engle registered a 302 (67-74-80-81) and Ben Bankheadlogged a 304 (76-72-77-79),
Jonathon Thomas and Gentry Hicks each led the Utes in the final round as they each carded a 77 to finish with final scores of 306. Thomas went 74-76-80-76, while Hicks carded scores of 73-76-80-77. Casey Hallidaycame in at 309 (72-75-80-82).
Last Time Out
Utah placed eighth last weekend at the OGIO Santa Barbara Intercollegiate in Santa Barbra, Calif. The squad turned in a three-round score of 888 (301-291-296) at the Sandpiper Golf Course while two Ute individuals placed in the top 15.
Senior Halliday went two under with a 214 (72-68-74) to tie for second, while sophomore Thomas swung a two-over 218 (73-72-73) to tie for 11th.
Senior Bankhead finished in the middle of Utah's lineup after posting his tournament low during the third round. He tied for 36th with a score of 227 (79-75-73), while junior Maerki tied for 44th with a mark of 229 (77-76-76). Senior Engle turned in a 242 (84-80-78) to place 63rd.
