PARK CITY - The Utah men's golf team carded a final-round 15-over par on Tuesday to finish in a tie for fifth-place at the OGIO Utah Invitational that was held at Jeremy Ranch Golf and Country Club in Park City.
The Utes, who tied with UT-Arlington and Arkansas-Little Rock, shot 31-over par (366-360-370=1096) over the 54-hole event, 31 strokes behind Santa Clara, who finished in first place with a two-day score of even-par (361-356-348=1065). Seatlle (+11, 360-361-355=1076, Pacific (+19, 363-367-354=1084) and Boise State (+30, 370-366-359=1095) rounded out the top five teams, finishing second through fourth overall, respectively.
"Overall, it's really disappointing," said Utah head coach Randall McCracken. "You can't play that poorly at your home event, at your home golf course. The players know that, the coaches know that, and we have to play better golf. Our guys are much better than this, but we have to get back at it and get ready to go down to Texas in a few weeks."
Utah's Brandon Kida recorded the best finish for the Utes, finishing in a tie for 11th-place with a two-day score of two-over par ( 70-73-72=215). Max McGrail followed, finishing in a tie for 18th-place with a score of four-over par (72-71-74=217) and Jose Pelayo followed in a tie for 21st-place with a score of five-over par (74-75-69=218).
Pelayo's round of two-under par (69) on Tuesday was Utah's lowest round of the day and it tied for the fourth lowest round among players in the field.
Jonathan Thomas carded a six-over par (77-69-73=219) for the tournament and finished in a tie for 28th-place, while Gentry Hicks tied for 68th-place with a score of 18-over par (77-72-82=231). Jack Maerki rounded out team scoring for the Utes with a 77th-place finish after carding a 24-over par (73-82-82=237) over the two-day event.
Playing as individuals for Utah, Steven Croft finished in a tie for 41st-place with a score of nine-over par (79-72-71=222) and Brent Pollock finished in a tie for 48th-place with a two-day score of 11-over par (71-82-71=224).
Southern Utah's Nic Booth and Joe Harvie each tallied a combined three-under par after 54 holes of play and Booth came away with the individual title after winning the fifth playoff hole with a par.
The Utes will have a two-week break before returning to action at the Price's "Give 'Em Five" Invitational, which will be hosted by UT-El Paso and held in El Paso, Texas. First round action will get underway on Friday, Oct. 24.
