SALT LAKE CITY - Junior Miles Havlick of the University of Utah ski team was named the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association Men's Nordic MVP.
The award is based on the total accumulation of NCAA qualification points in the four regular-season meets. Havlick scored an impressive 389 points out of a possible 400 and finished on the podium in each of the eight regular season races.
"It is a huge honor to receive this award," Havlick said. "I just missed it last year due to illness and it was one of my goals to stay healthy for the whole season this year. This award really belongs to all my teammates as well. Without everyone pushing each other in training all fall, we would not be where we are right now. [Utah Head Nordic coach] Abi [Holt] and [Utah Director of Skiing] Kevin [Sweeney] have been awesome at the wax table this year, enabling us to ski to our potential and allowing for consistent results required to receive awards like this one. I want to send a huge thank you to the coaches, my teammates, and the whole Utah program."
Havlick won the 10km freestyle race at the Alaska Anchorage Invitational on Feb. 6, then took second in three races and third four other times.
Havlick opened the season with three straight second-place finishes in both races at the University of Colorado/Spencer Nelson Memorial Invitational as well as the classical event the following week at the Denver Invitational. Havlick capped the DU Invite by taking third in the freestyle race.
During the team's two-week trip to Alaska, Havlick broke through and got his race victory in the freestyle race at the UAA Invitational and then took third place in the other three races.
Havlick finished tied for ninth in last season's MVP race despite missing two races and was the top-ranked skier who missed a race. During his freshman season in 2010, he finished 17th while once again missing two races.
The Boulder, Colo., native is a three-time All-American, earning a pair of honors last season and one in 2010 as a freshman. He was named Ski Racing Magazine's Men's Nordic Collegiate Skier of the Year in 2011 in addition to first-team All-RMISA honors. He was a second-team 2010 All-RMISA selection as a freshman.
Havlick has won five races during his first three seasons as a Ute and has finished on the podium 16 times. He has finished fifth or better in 19 of his 30 career races.
The postseason begins this week in Bozeman, Mont., where both the NCAA Western Regional/RMISA Championships and NCAA Championships will be held over the next three weeks.
Two days of alpine racing that will only count toward NCAA Qualifying and not team scoring will be ran from Wednesday and Thursday at Bridger Bowl, before the NCAA Western Regional/RMISA Championships will be held Friday and Saturday.
