Logan, Utah- The University of Utah women's cross country team capped off the first race of the season with a third-place finish at the Utah State Open. The Utes were led by the heroic effort of their freshmen group.
"Overall we ran well today," said Utah head coach Kyle Kepler. "This was a good way to start the season. Four of our five top finishers were freshmen, which was very impressive."
Leading the way for the Utes was true freshman Susannah Hurst. In her first collegiate race, Hurst finished second with a time of 17:30. Freshman Nicole Rietz finished in the top-10 with a time of 17:56.7 (eighth overall). Freshmen Macee Nielson (18:19.1) and Lauren Mills (18:20.1) finished 23rd and 25th, respectively for the Utes.
Earning her first points for the Utes, junior Hilary Troutner finished fifth overall with a time of 17:47.2.
The Utes collected 55 points to finish third. The overall winner of the meet was BYU with 40 points.
"Troutner put in a ton of miles this summer and it paid off today," said Kepler. "I feel good about our depth and thought our freshmen did really well today. I feel our team is more improved than we have been in previous years at this point."
The Utah cross country team continues its season on September 10 at the Nevada Twilight held in Reno, Nev.
